What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

Some Photos

Whilst Reception children were doing their RWInc sessions, Nursery worked on their fine motor carousels. We traced patterns, built towers, made shapes in the sand with our pointing fingers and made faces from loose parts.

We all managed to get down to the forest in between showers. We had great fun looking in all the bug houses and running in and out of the trees. We were very excited to see a worm!!

Wythnos 2 - Week 2 (Week beginning 11th of September)

Beth sy'n digwydd yr wythnos hon? What's happening this week?

We just want to say a HUGE well done to all the pupils this week.  Whether your child is new to Penygawsi or returning from last year, each and every one of them has settled so well and has enjoyed their first three days in Y Felin Wynt.  Once we have all the permission forms back we will start sharing some photos here and on SeeSaw.

New Nursery Pupils

The new Nursery pupils will be staying in school until 1pm this week.  They are invited to either have school dinners or you can provide a packed lunch.  We try to encourage our pupils to have school dinners, as this also supports them in trying new foods and learning to use cutlery.  However, until the term after your child's fourth birthday, there will be a charge for school dinners.  When your child left class on Friday, all parents/grandparents were given a letter with a code to pay for the dinners on the RCT website.  If you have any problems, please see Mrs Cox in the office on Monday morning and she will be able to assist you.  If your child does decide to have packed lunch, please ensure that you do not provide any nuts or food including nuts (such as Nutella) as we do have children in the school who are severely allergic to them.  Your child will also need their daily healthy snack and a refillable water bottle.

Dydd Llun - Monday

Mrs Farrell teaching

Please bring 3 photos to school in a clearly labelled envelope showing 3 different activities that your child took part in over the Summer holidays e.g. holiday, trip to the beach, visiting family members, playing in the park, visiting a farm/zoo etc.  We will return the photos once we have completed our task.

Please can your child bring their own healthy snack to school. Please can it be clearly labelled and placed in a container or bag, to prevent other children touching it directly. Pori Drwy Stori

Dear Parent / Carer Your child is taking part in the Pori Drwy Stori Nursery programme. The aim of the programme is to develop your child’s speaking and listening skills and to give you the opportunity to be more involved in your child’s learning. The first part of the programme was ‘It’s time to rhyme’. The second part of the programme is ‘Book Talk’ Sharing books with your child is a great way to develop language skills, build confidence and to spend special time with your child. Reading with your child for just ten minutes a day can make a real difference as they start school. Your child will receive one picture book for you to share together. They will also receive some Book Talk activities and a question card to help you talk about the book with your child, and some fun challenges to complete at home. Cuddling up and reading quietly together is great. But reading doesn’t always have to be quiet! Talking about the books you read can really help your child with their speaking and listening skills. It will also help their reading and writing skills when they start school. On the Pori Drwy Stori website you will find information and support to help you share the book with your child

We will send the new packs home on Monday for you to explore.

This week your child will given a blank ‘All about me profile’ to complete with your support.  Please complete the sheet together (parents to scribe for younger children) and return the sheet to your class teacher.

All About Me Profiles

We believe that all about me profiles are the foundation of personalisation, and can lead to positive change for people, whatever their age or circumstances. They provide us with an at-a-glance way of knowing what really matters to our pupils, that can be taken with them as they move through the school and may come into contact with other teachers or services.

What is an All About Me Profile?

A All About Me Profile captures all the important information about a child on a single sheet of paper under three simple headings: what people appreciate about me, what’s important to me and how best to support me.

How can they help us to support your child better?

All About Me Profiles are deceptively simple, and in this simplicity lies their strength. They help us to support people better by:

·         Helping us build better relationships by truly understanding what really matters to the child in their life and the way they are supported.

·         Providing a record that can move with the child as they transition from class to class or use with outside agencies that may need to work with your child.

·         Being regularly updated to reflect people’s changing circumstances and aspirations

·         When children have All About Me Profiles, the class teacher feels like they get to know the child at a deeper level.

·         All staff working with your child will have a better understanding of their needs and how they can be supported.

What to do next?

·         Please complete the profile with your child.  Younger children will need you to scribe.

·         In the box “How I want to be supported”, please record how you would support your child at home with any additional needs e.g. if your child is colour blind you may write “please refrain from using red pen on the board as I am unable to see it.”

·         Your child’s class teacher will be adding to this box over the next few weeks too.

Please return by Wednesday Tuesday 9th May .

Polite notice- Please ensure you leave a spare set of clothing in school in case of any accidents/messy play as we have limited spares.

What’s happening this week?

Dydd Mawrth/ Tuesday

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 2nd March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school!

They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

I look forward to seeing you all in your odd socks on Tuesday!

Pori Drwy Stori

Dear Parent / Carer, after half term your child will be taking part in the Pori Drwy Stori Nursery programme. The aim of the programme is to develop your child’s speaking and listening skills and to give you the opportunity to be more involved in your child’s learning. The first part of the programme is ‘It’s time to rhyme!’ Rhymes help children understand how language works. Sharing rhymes and songs helps children to learn the different sounds in a language, to feel its rhythm and to have fun with words. These things will really help your child to talk, read and write. You are encouraged to join in at home and get the whole family involved in learning the rhymes. You don’t need any musical talent or even to be in tune - just have fun learning together! We’ll let you know which of the rhymes we’ll be learning each week. You’ll get a copy of each rhyme and there are videos of the Welsh and English rhymes on the Pori Drwy Stori website to help you and your child learn and enjoy the rhymes together: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/poridrwystori-nursery-listen-to-the-rhymes Happy rhyming!

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by the morning of Thursday 20th October.

Thank you for your continued support

On the Pori Drwy Stori website you will find information and support to help you share the book with your child. You can listen to the book being read in Welsh here: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/poridrwystori[1]nursery-book-talk

We will start the next part of Pori Drwy Stori after Easter. I will update you weekly on what you need to do.

I just want to a say a huge thank you for all your support this term, we hope you all have a lovely break and we will see you back on Monday 25th April.

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

Gift Aid

The PTA are looking to reclaim Gift Aid on school donations so that we have more money to spend on school projects and initiatives.

In order to do this, we need to collect information for HMRC. To make this as simple as possible we have created a Microsoft Form to collate this information and would be really grateful if you could please complete.

All data collected is held in the Hwb servers and will only be used for this purpose.

Pori Drwy Stori

Dear Parent / Carer,  This term your child will be taking part in the Pori Drwy Stori Nursery programme.

What a fantastic week the children have had at Nursery. They have all settled well into the Nursery routines and have enjoyed exploring their new classroom.

Times
This week the children will be in school 9.00am until 1pm. The children will be staying for lunch. They will go into the main dining hall to eat it, we will be there to support them this week alongside the lunchtime supervisors. This will take place at 11.30am.

Here is the menu.

School Dinner Menu

The dinner will cost £2.55 per day. On Friday you were given a unique number which allows you to pay for these online. However, if you wish to bring in a packed lunch that is also fine. The children will need to tell us each day what option they are going for.

All about me Profile

This week your child will bring home a blank ‘All about me profile’ to complete with your support.

What is a All About Me Profile?

Please return by Monday 24th January.

Help!! We are creating our own fish tanks if you have any spare shoe boxes please can you send them in.

If you have any questions regarding your child, please don't hesitate to speak to one of us.

Miss Vowles and Team

I have shared our Christmas Concert with you on J2E. Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall.

They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded. They must not be shared on any form of social media. Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online. It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes, that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

‘Only by working together, can we achieve our aims.’

Anti-Bullying Week

Next week is Anti-Bullying Week, an annual UK event which aims to raise awareness of bullying and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.  At Penygawsi we understand the importance of raising awareness during this week and providing our pupils with the tools and strength needed if they ever find themselves being bullied.

This year the theme is ‘One Kind Word’, emphasising the positive impact a small gesture or comment can have on someone else’s day.  The week will begin on 15th November with 'odd socks day'. This day helps us to recognise that everyone is unique and different, and that we all need kindness and respect.

Miss Vowles😊

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  The pupils will be participating in a special harvest assembly.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by Monday 1st November 2021.

Thank you for your continued support

We have been nominated to take part in the Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme. We can collect tokens which can be exchanged for gardening equipment for our school.

For every £10 you spend (in store or online), you will get a 'grow' token which can be donated to a school of your choice.  You need to download the MyMorrisons app to start collecting and to nominate the school you would like to donate your 'grow' tokens to.

This is a great opportunity to get some new gardening equipment for our school allotment, so please tell any family or friends who shop in Morrisons all about it! Diolch.

We will be sending out a blank ‘All About Me Profile’ to complete with your support.

What is a All About Me Profile?

·         When children have a All About Me Profile, the class teacher feels like they get to know the child at a deeper level.

Please return the completed All About Me Profile by Monday 11th October.

If you have any questions regarding your child, please don't hesitate to speak to one of us.

Snack

Please can your child bring their own healthy snack to school. Please can it be clearly labelled and placed in a container or bag, to prevent other children touching it directly. Even if the snack is a banana, it will need to be put into a sealed food bag with a name on it. Before the children eat their snack they will be washing their hands ready to collect it and eat it at a table.  Outside the classroom there will be a labelled snack box and water bottle box. Before the children enter the class please place your items in the correct box. I will be splitting the children into 3 groups- Hedgehogs, Squirrels and Owls. I will send home a slip stating which group your child is in on the first day back. For the first day please can you leave them in their bag.

The children will also be offered milk during snack time. If you do not want your child to drink this, please can you specify at the door.

Parent/Carer Letter Confirmed LFT Case

School Traffic Survey

Our school is working in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCTCBC) and WEPCO (the design and delivery partner) on a school travel plan. A school travel plan is a range of measures that aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport use;
  • Improve road safety;
  • Reduce traffic and pollution;
  • Improve levels of health and fitness; and
  • Raise awareness of road safety, health and environmental issues.

An important part of developing the travel plan is understanding how and why everyone travels to school in the way they do.

The survey is now open and you're invited to have your say! Please note that a separate link is provided for pupils, staff and parents and each survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. By gaining a better understanding of your current travel patterns and choices, we can work towards a more sustainable future and ensure that each individual voice is heard during the design process.

We are still looking for resources for our Garden Centre Roleplay if you could kindly donate something that would be kindly appreciated.

Pre-Nursery

On Friday I sent home a One-Page profile can you fill it out and send it back into school by 21/4/21 here is some information:

Please complete the sheet together (parents to scribe for younger children) and return the sheet to your class teacher.

One Page Profiles

We believe that one-page profiles are the foundation of personalisation, and can lead to positive change for people, whatever their age or circumstances. They provide us with an at-a-glance way of knowing what really matters to our pupils, that can be taken with them as they move through the school and may come into contact with other teachers or services.

What is a One Page Profile?

A One Page Profile captures all the important information about a child on a single sheet of paper under three simple headings: what people appreciate about me, what’s important to me and how best to support me.

How can they help us to support your child better?

One Page Profiles are deceptively simple, and in this simplicity lies their strength. They help us to support people better by:

·         Helping us build better relationships by truly understanding what really matters to the child in their life and the way they are supported.

·         Providing a record that can move with the child as they transition from class to class or use with outside agencies that may need to work with your child.

·         Being regularly updated to reflect people’s changing circumstances and aspirations.

·         When children have One Page Profiles, the class teacher feels like they get to know the child at a deeper level.

·         All staff working with your child will have a better understanding of their needs and how they can be supported.

What to do next?

·         Please complete the profile with your child.  Younger children will need you to scribe.

·         In the box “How I want to be supported”, please record how you would support your child at home with any additional needs e.g., if your child is colour blind you may write “please refrain from using red pen on the board as I am unable to see it.”

·         Your child’s class teacher will be adding to this box over the next few weeks too.

If you have any questions regarding your child, please don't hesitate to speak to one of us.

Week beginning 12/4/21.

I hope you all had a lovely half term and recharged your batteries ready for a busy term. We have been lucky with the beautiful sunny weather! I am looking forward to welcoming you back tomorrow.

Our Summer Topic is “Together Stronger”. This term we will be learning all about plants and growth. We will be working in groups to grow our very own Sunflowers and designing a Plant pot!

This week we will be learning about the Lifecycle of a Sunflower, labelling parts of a sunflower, counting petals on flowers, and planting our Sunflower seeds.

What’s happening this week?

Dydd Mercher/Wednesday-Welly Wednesday: all children will take part in Welly Wednesday as of 14/4/21. If your child does not have wellies in school can you please bring a pair in before Wednesday and please make sure they are clearly labelled.

PE: (all children to wear PE kits to school) Ensure no jewellery is worn. They will need to wear plain black/navy leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers. On our PE day, please can children wear trainers with Velcro/easy fastenings to help them when they are taking them on and off. We are encouraging the children to be as independent as possible. Some children find putting shoes and socks on quite tricky, please can you help them to practise at home? Can you please make sure their PE kit is clearly labelled.

Garden Centre Roleplay

We will be changing our Roleplay area into a Garden Centre, we will need lots of resources if you have any of the following that you could possibly donate that would be greatly appreciated.

Seeds
Small pots
Medium Pots
Large pots
Topsoil/ Compost
Gardening tools
Watering cans
Flowers
Gardening magazines
or anything you think could be suitable?

Lunchboxes

If your child is sandwiches and brings a lunch box could I please ask that it comes in a zipped bag with a handle. This will help the children carry their lunchboxes over to the school hall. This will avoid the children dropping them and food spillages. We have a new stand in our cloakroom. This is where we will put our lunchboxes in the morning, so they don’t need to come in the rucksack. I know some of your children have the compartment lunchboxes they are fine but can they be put inside a zipped bag please.
Here are some ideas.

On Sunday 21st of March it is World Down Syndrome Day.  As a school, we always raise awareness of this day, and this year is no different.  On Friday 19th of March we are asking that all pupils come to school wearing 'lots of socks', crazy socks or maybe mismatched socks.  Let's get people talking about Down Syndrome!

Your child will come home with an Easter Raffle tickets today.  Please can these be returned to school by Thursday 18th March?  Sorry for quick turn a round. Apologies from PTA but they have been waiting for the tickets to arrive.

This week we are planning and designing our fruit kebabs for us to make the week after. We will be investigating and predicting which fruit will sink and which fruit will float. Learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly and comparing and size ordering fruit.

Week beginning 8/3/21.

Prynhawn Da, wow what a busy week we have had! We celebrated St. David’s Day, we started our topic, and we found a note from The Very Hungry Caterpillar to go on a hunt. He left a trail of fruit as our clues; He had left us a present with a letter attached to it!!! We started back PE and Welly Wednesday. On Thursday we celebrated World book day our focus story was Supertato and most importantly we had new friends join our classroom. Da iawn girls and boys you have all settled back fantastically.

What’s happening this week?

Dydd Mercher/Wednesday

PE kits to be worn to school (Not Pre-Nursery). Welly Wednesday- Please ensure your child has a warm coat.

This week we are sorting healthy and unhealthy foods and why it is important to keep fit and healthy. We will be discussing food we like and dislike. We will be retelling the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and ordering what food he ate 1st, 2nd, 3rd, last and lots more fun activities.

To reduce the amount of 'traffic' at the front of the school. We ask all parents to collect your children from Nursery between 3:00pm and 3:10pm if they have no siblings in school.

Pre-Nursery
What a fantastic week the children have had at Nursery. They have all settled well into the Nursery routines and have enjoyed exploring their new classroom and meeting their new friends.

We would normally post photos weekly to show you what they have been up to, however we are still waiting on photo permission slips to be returned. Keep looking out to spot your little one learning in school!

Times
This week the children will be in school 9.00am until 1.00pm all week.

Lunch
This week the children will be staying for lunch. They will go into the main dining hall to eat it. This will take place at 11.45am.
Here is the menu we are on Week 2

The dinner will cost £2.55 per day. Over the next week you will be given a unique number which allows you to pay for these online. However, if you wish to bring in a packed lunch that is also fine. The children will need to tell us each day what option they are going for.

Letters
Please can you ensure that the contact information and permission slips are returned to the school office as soon as possible.

If you have any questions regarding your child, please don't hesitate to speak to one of us.

Spring 2021

This term our topic is 'Love Where You Live'. In our class we have decided to focus on healthy food and why it is important to keep fit and eat healthy. This will be a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Project which will see us become top researchers and designers. The Hungry Caterpillar has sent us a letter asking if we can help him plan and make healthy fruit kebabs. We will be researching local shops in Llantrisant so we know where to buy our ingredients from and doing lots of sorting activities e.g. Healthy food and Un-healthy food. We will be writing a list of healthy foods and a list of ingredients we need for our fruit kebab. In science we will be using different fruits to see if they change in shape when stretched, squashed, bent and twisted, and when heated or cooled. As our focus story will be The Very Hungry Caterpillar the children will be looking at the life-cycle of a caterpillar and designing what they think their butterfly will look like after eating healthy food. In maths we will be Comparing, sorting and ordering two fruits in terms of size, weight or capacity by direct observation.

Welcome!

Welcome to our new class page for Y Felin Wynt. This is where you will find new information about your child’s class. I will update this class page regularly and I will be putting the weekly update on here every Sunday instead of the blog. I am excited to start using our new website so you can see what your child is getting up to in class.

Thanks,
Miss Vowles
