World Down Syndrome Day - Please see information below.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

We will be having cycling training with RCTCBC on the 15th, 16th and 20th October. Here are the requirements:

  • Must be an accomplished cyclist and able to ride one-handed with either hand to be able to indicate.
  • Have a roadworthy bike with tyres pumped, front and rear working brakes, working gears (if present) and the bike needs to e the correct size.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

We are very excited to inform you that we have been lucky enough to secure a seven-week project with Upbeat Wales for Years 4 to 6.  Upbeat Wales are a music and dance company who are determined to ensure the children in Wales get the best possible opportunities to find joy in creating performances.  They are a team of experienced facilitators with a specialism in offering whole class music and dance tuition.

We have booked these workshops as part of our Expressive Arts topic ‘Lights, Camera Action!’ This project will take the place of a   We will be delving into the wonderful world of junk percussion, where the children will have the opportunity to plan, create and perform a piece of music in the style of Stomp.  At the end of the project we are excited to invite you in to watch the performance; a date will be confirmed closer to the time.

This amazing experience has been booked instead of an off-sight visit for this half term and we ask for a £10 contribution towards the seven workshops.  We are sure you will agree that this experience will have a positive impact on the children’s wellbeing as well as inspiring future musicians and performers.

We ask that payment be made electronically by Friday 15th September.  Please use the following link to pay: https://shorturl.at/cfoDM

Thank you as always, for your continued support

Kind regards

Mrs Rees, Mrs Evans and Miss Morris

Week Commencing 11th September

I hope the children enjoyed their first few days in Year 6, I had a great time getting to know them all.  We created a Class Charter by choosing the most important 'Rights' that we feel we should be entitled to and how we can ensure that we all have them.  We had a great time discussing and debating which one was the most important.  The children showed great maturity when putting their own viewpoint across.  We have so many exciting opportunites planned for the year but lets start with what is happening this week:

Just to give you a heads up we will be having Cycling Proficiency in October.  It will be offered to all pupils in Year 6 who can cycle well as they will be taken out onto the main road in small groups with experienced trainers.  More information will be given soon.

The children will need to be reading as much as possible so I will send reading books home this week and your child will know when it is their day to read with me.

As usual homework will be set every Wednesday and needs to be completed by the following Monday.  I urge all children to complete the activities as I am preparing them for Secondary School.  I appreciate that there will be times that unavoidable things happen and homework can't be completed, but I will be expecting every effort to be made.

I hope you have all had a restful summer and are ready to experience the responsibilities and excitement of being Year 6 pupils.  I am so looking forward to spending your final year with you all, I'm sure we will have lots of fun whilst working extremely hard.  Just in case any of you are not sure who I am:

Our PE day will be a Tuesday starting from Tuesday 12th September.  Please could children wear their school PE kit (plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers).  They will also need a drink and healthy nut free snack each day.  To avoid confusion please could all clothing be labelled with your child's name.

I will update the class page on the website by Sunday evening each week.  If there is an urgent message I will send a text to inform you.  School information will be uploaded to the main page.

This week is all about us getting to know one another and settling into school life again.  We will also remind ourselves of the school rules and we will create our class charter.

I am looking forward to seeing you all in the morning!!

Wow where has the year gone.  I can't believe how quick the year has flown by.  We have had a great time with lots of adventures along the way, from our trip to Clifton Suspension Bridge, Llangrannog Residential and lastly our Prom and even a cooking experience in between.  It has been a pleasure to teach such amazing young people and I have enjoyed every second with each and every one of you.  Be proud of everything that you have achieved and be excited by the adventures that lay ahead for you all.  I can't wait to see where your talents take you.  For the final time:

Well-being

This week the topic for Jigsaw (PSHE Scheme of Work) is Exploitation.  The Learning Objectives are:

  • Understand that some people can be exploited and made to do things that are against the law
  • Can suggest ways that someone who is being exploited can help themselves

The key vocabulary we will be using:

  • Exploited
  • Vulnerable
  • Drugs
  • Criminal
  • Illegal
  • Gangs

The session will centre around how children can be used/exploited in criminal activity without realising what is happening.

If you have any questions please contact the office by telephone or email and I will contact you to explain in more detail.

Have a lovely weekend and I'll see you on Sunday afternoon.  We will send a parent text with our expected time of return when we are on the way home.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 21st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school!

They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

I look forward to seeing you all in your odd socks on Tuesday!

Spring Term Topic - Expressive Arts

This Is Me!!

Our focus for the term is Expressive Arts with a particular focus on developing our artistic skills.  We will be looking at how art contibutes to culture and social identity.  In particular we will learn about Autralian Aboriginal Art and Venetian Art and the culture behind wearing masks.  The children will end the term by making a mask to represent their identity and culture.  We will be working with different artistic skills such as sketching, cross hatching, shading, dot art and many more.

We will also be writing biographies of artists and after half-term we will be writing stories from other cultures.  We will also be developing our number skills and using them to plan and budget for an exhibition.

The children were lucky enough to have a look up close at the work of a local artist and ask questions.  We are also planning a visit to Cardiff Museum on the 16th February, further details will be uploaded soon.

Children in Need is on Friday 18th November and School Council have been working hard to think of some lovely ideas for us to celebrate as a school.

Pupils can choose to wear spots, pyjamas or non-school uniform on this day, and we kindly ask for a donation of £1 to go towards the charity.

Mrs Evans

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by the morning of Thursday 20th October.

Thank you for your continued support

Permission for walking.

Please click on the link below and complete the online form if you would like your child to walk home without adult supervision.

Week commencing 12th September

We had a great start to our new school year in Eryri.  The children have settled in and are ready for an exciting final year with us.  However, it was tinged with sadness at the end of the week when we heard of our Queen Elizabeth' passing.  We respectfully acknowledged her 70 years as our Monarch by discussing photos of her throughout her line of duty.  I am sure that we will continue to remember her over the coming days and weeks.

The children have been introduced to our new topic through some problem solving activities (building the tallest structure and the strongest bridge) using resources given to them.  They finally found out that we are going to be studying 'bridges' as part of our 'Super Structures' theme.  I will upload photos soon.

As part of our new topic we have arranged a trip to visit Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday 21st September.  The trip will consist of a tour of the bridge and a workshop where the children will have an opportunity to make their own bridge through problem solving and budgeting activities. We will need to be leaving the school at 8:30am to be able to be there by 10am for us to make the most of the opportunity.  We will return to school by 3pm.

Due to the increasing costs of fuel our wonderful PTA have agreed to support school trips this term by contributing £200 towards the cost of the coach.  Their generous contribution has meant that the cost per child is reduced to support us in these financially difficult times.  The school has also made a contribution.  We ask for a contribution from youselves of £12.50 per child.  It will be a great experience for the children to learn all about Clifton Suspension Bridge.  Please click on the link below for payment.

The children will start swimming on Monday 19th September, as part of the curriculum we ask that children take part each week until Christmas.  We have been allocated a morning slot.  The children need to wear a full piece swimming costume (girls) or swim shorts for boys.  They can bring goggles if they have them.  We have limited time at the pool so no time will be given to wash and dry hair so if hair can be in a bobble for this day it would make it easier for the children.

The week ahead:

Dydd Mawrth/ Tuesday

The children will need to wear PE kit to school as it is their Fit4Fun session.

I will upload our termly newsletter to this page soon.

End of day pick-up

Please could we ask that you follow the arrows and continue moving when collecting your child at the end of the school day.  If you need to speak to the class teacher please could you move to the side so that others can continue moving around the pick-up area.  This will ensure that teachers can see the children leaving the yard safely with an adult - especially the younger KS2 children.  Many thanks for your ongoing support with this.

Fit4fun after school football.

Starting on Tuesday 13th September, Years 5 and 6 can attend the Fit4Fun afterschool activity, this term it will be football but will change next term.  It will be a 7 week course and will cost £31.50 in total, if interested please click on the link below:

Also if your child is interested in playing rugby, I have attached a poster for Llantrisant U11's rugby, who are looking for new players.

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

World Down Syndrome Day - Monday 21st March 2022

The #LotsOfSocks campaign exists to raise awareness about Down syndrome.

#LotsOfSocks help us to get people talking on World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), celebrated each year on 21 March.

All you need to do is choose some socks that are going to get noticed - they might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy and wear them to school next Monday!

If someone asks you about your socks you can tell them, "I'm wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome"

Get yourself informed so you can tell them about Down syndrome.

Be a part of the global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.

Rights Morning - 9th March

As part of our weekly rights session in KS2, we have decided that this week's articles will link to war and conflict.  With the ever increasing news coverage of the heart-breaking situation in Ukraine, and the increased number of questions coming from our pupils, we feel it is important to discuss what is happening.  Years 3 to 6 will take part in discussion activities and circle time sessions where their feelings and fears will be addressed. Obviously each session will be age appropriate dependent on the year group and the amount of information discussed will differ from years 3 to 6.

As a school, we feel it is important to address this matter but also offer support to the people of Ukraine.  We are therefore asking for a £1 donation to the charity UNICEF who we are working closely with as we continue on our rights journey.  UNICEF currently have an emergency Ukraine crisis appeal and are one of the many humanitarian charities calling for an immediate ceasefire.

How UNICEF is helping children in Ukraine?

They have been working tirelessly to keep children safe since this conflict began eight years ago and they are determined to remain in Ukraine to reach the most vulnerable children and families.

  • They are helping to provide families with access to clean water and healthy food.
  • They are delivering lifesaving supplies to support families who have been forced to flee and are working closely with local health facilities to ensure they have the vital supplies needed.
  • They are helping to make sure that child protection services continue.
  • They are working with our partners and the UNHCR to assess the refugee situation across neighbouring countries.
  • In neighbouring countries they are delivering Blue Dot safe spaces with our partners, which will provide care and support, information to families seeking refuge, psychosocial support, water and sanitation supplies, safe spaces for mothers and children, protection for unaccompanied and separated children and more.

We thank you for your continued support and appreciate any donations that are given.

Kind Regards

Christmas Performance

Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall.

They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded.

They must not be shared on any form of social media.

Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online.

It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes, that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

Educational visit

We have been fortunate enough to secure an educational visit from a group called 'Divergent' for the children on Thursday 18th November at school.  They will work with years 5 and 6 in our class bubbles.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance pupils drama and Oracy skills and will link to our World War 2 topic.  This will support us with the end product of our topic, which will see us showcase our Oracy skills as we plan to act out one area of World War 2 that we have researched this term.

We kindly ask for a contribution of £5 to cover the cost of the workshop, which should be paid online.

Follow click on the link below to make a payment.  Please search in the 'Filter' box for Penygawsi Primary School and then choose 'Year 5 and Year 6 Workshop' which is on the second page.  The link will close on Wednesday 17th November.

Children In Need - 2021

As you may be aware, Children in Need is on Friday 19th November.  School Council and Super Ambassadors met last week to discuss how we can celebrate one of our most favourite days in the school calendar safely.  We have decided that the children will celebrate in their class bubbles but everyone will come to school dressed in the same theme.

This year, School Council have decided upon HEROES as our theme.  This means children can come dressed as their most treasured hero for the day.  If you do not have a costume at home or your child does not have a specific hero then they are welcome to come dressed in their pjs instead.  We will be asking for a £1 donation for this special charity.

I am looking forward to meeting with parents on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Harvest Festival 2021

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  It is going to be a little different this year and we will be delivering our Harvest items in our class bubbles virtually.  The pupils will enjoy the assembly from the comfort of their classrooms with each class celebrating in their own unique way.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes

Week commencing 13th September

Good evening I hope you have all had a lovely weekend.  We had a great first week back getting to know one another.  We discussed the Children's Rights and the rules that we need to follow.  The children also ordered different events and movements that have happened in the past on  a timeline.  There was also lots of discussion about what they would like to learn in the different areas of learning linking to our theme 'Through The Keyhole'.

The children should have brought a letter home for you to apply for their secondary school place.  If you haven't received this please let me know.

We have assessed the children's spelling so they should have brought their list home to practice.  We will be starting on list 1.

Dydd Mawrth

Wear PE kit to school for Fit4Fun session.

Dydd Mercher

Language homework will be set and needs to be completed by Monday 20th September.

Week Commencing 12th July

I have uploaded the Prom photos to J2e, please let me know if you are unable to see them.

There will be more uploaded as we go through the week.  I will share the Leavers Assembly with you later in the week along with the song.

It is with mixed emotions that I write the final Eryri post for Year 6 this evening.  Firstly I must say I am so proud of the children for their maturity, kindness and sheer grit for getting through a tough year without any complaints.  It has been a real pleasure being on the journey with them and sharing such a unique experience.  We have developed in our own way and found a new way of learning and communicating with each other through the Online Learning Experience. Huge thanks to all of the families for supporting the children throughout the year as they would not be where they are now without us all working together.

The children are ready to take on the new challenges that Secondary School will pose and I am confident that they will rise to each and every one on them.  I would love for them to keep in touch to let us know how they are doing.

I would like to thank you all for you kind gifts that I received at the end of the Prom on Thursday, I was very overwhelmed.

I am looking forward to spending our last week together!!

We had the most amazing 2021 Prom evening.  The children looked fantastic, seeing the glamorous girls and the boys all suited and booted,  felt like I was in the middle of a television award ceremony. Not to mention the Fast and Furious themed arrivals, it really was a star studded prom to remember.  I will be sharing the photos with the class on J2e for you all to look at.

I would like to say a massive thank you to our fantastic PTA who made the evening so special.  They went above and beyond for us to have the best evening.  Thank you to Mrs Mallin for the beautiful cakes.

Your children really are a credit to you, their behaviour and enthusiasm is outstanding.

Many thanks to you all.

Week commencing 5th July

Please see below for information about the Prom.

Prom Information

Hi all we are getting very close to the big event of the year.  I want to update you all with the plans for the evening.

Key mitigating measures

You must not attend if you have any of the three main symptoms of COVID-19;

  • new persistent cough
  • fever
  • loss of taste or smell

You should instead self-isolate and arrange a COVID-19 test. We will ensure we will follow all other guidelines as we have outlined in a risk assessment that has been written for this occasion.

Mobile Phones

We will not be permitting the use of mobile phones in school during the Prom.  We will take plenty of photos of the children during the evening and will share them with you afterwards.  So there will be no need for the use of phones.

Dropping Off

Please could you drop your child off at the bottom of the driveway by the main gates at 6pm as it will be safer to limit the amount of people on site.  Could you also collect from the same place at 8pm. There will no cars allowed up the drive during the evening.  Any pre-booked transport (Limos etc) will need to drop off at the bottom of the drive as well.

We will be recording the leavers song this week so please be in every day and bring clothes for the song with you every day.

School Traffic Survey

Our school is working in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCTCBC) and WEPCO (the design and delivery partner) on a school travel plan. A school travel plan is a range of measures that aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport use;
  • Improve road safety;
  • Reduce traffic and pollution;
  • Improve levels of health and fitness; and
  • Raise awareness of road safety, health and environmental issues.

An important part of developing the travel plan is understanding how and why everyone travels to school in the way they do.

The survey is now open and you're invited to have your say! Please note that a separate link is provided for pupils, staff and parents and each survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. By gaining a better understanding of your current travel patterns and choices, we can work towards a more sustainable future and ensure that each individual voice is heard during the design process.  Please click on the link below and support your child in completing the survey.

Summer Term 2021

Wow I can't believe that we are in the last term of 2021.  I know that this is an important term for Year 6 as they reach the end of primary school and prepare for their new adventure towards secondary school and beyond.  To say that I am so proud of the children with what they are accomplishing through these difficult times is an understatement.  They are amazing young people who I am enjoying being with on our journey.

I hope you have all have a lovely break and looking forward to the rest of our journey to the end of primary school.  Our new theme this term is 'Together Stronger' and the children have decided that they would like to make a 'Stop Motion Movie' for the end product of our topic which we are all excited about.  We will keep you informed and share the end product with you as the term progresses.

Please could the children wear PE kits to school every Tuesday as this will be their PE day.

This term our topic is based around 'Love Where You Live'.  We have decided to make use of our lovely grounds in school and grow our on vegetables and plants in the outdoor allotment area. We will be writing a Balanced Argument about whether we need to eat fruit and vegetables every day.  We will be researching the best produce to grow in the Spring and the best conditions for planting.  In Science we are looking at plants and undertaking investigations about the best conditions for germination.  In Maths we will look at measuring accurately.  Our Welsh topic is Hamdden and we are learning future and past tense sentence patterns to vary our writing.
