World Down Syndrome Day (see below)

Guided Reading – can all reading diaries be in school for all reading groups

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day! So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being.

Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

This week we will be planning and writing our first Big Write of the year.  As you know, our genre this term is Poetry and we have been delving into the wonderful world of poems and their features over the past two weeks. When you do your own poem this week you will be given a success criteria to follow with specific poetic features to include, but we need to remember our non-negotiables which I will be looking for.  Let's remind ourselves of them:

1. Date and LO

2. Capital Letters and Full Stops

3. Cursive Writing

4. Cross mistakes out with a pencil

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

We are very excited to inform you that we have been lucky enough to secure a seven-week project with Upbeat Wales for Years 4 to 6.  Upbeat Wales are a music and dance company who are determined to ensure the children in Wales get the best possible opportunities to find joy in creating performances.  They are a team of experienced facilitators with a specialism in offering whole class music and dance tuition.

We have booked these workshops as part of our Expressive Arts topic ‘Lights, Camera Action!’ This project will take the place of a   We will be delving into the wonderful world of junk percussion, where the children will have the opportunity to plan, create and perform a piece of music in the style of Stomp.  At the end of the project we are excited to invite you in to watch the performance; a date will be confirmed closer to the time.

This amazing experience has been booked instead of an off-sight visit for this half term and we ask for a £10 contribution towards the seven workshops.  We are sure you will agree that this experience will have a positive impact on the children’s wellbeing as well as inspiring future musicians and performers.

I hope the children had a great first few days back at school and in Year 5.  It was really lovely to spend the time to get to know them a little better.  We created a Class Charter by choosing the most important Rights that we feel we should be entitled to and how we can ensure that Respect them in class and around the school.  Lots of super discussion and debating which one was the most important.  The children showed great maturity when putting their own viewpoint across.  Keep up the great work Blwyddyn 5!

A Few Things to Note...

Swimming will start on Monday 18th September.  Children will need to bring their swimming kit to school along with a towel.  There will be no time for washing hair afterwards so please could long hair be tied back.

It is incredibly important that the children read as much as possible this year both at school and at home.  I will be sending new reading books home this week and your child will know when it is their day to read with me, which is when their reading diaries need to be in school.

As usual homework will be set every Wednesday and needs to be completed by the following Monday. Although homework is not compulsory, it is very important and there will be many times when the homework set will be in preparation for learning experiences back at school.  I appreciate that there will be times that unavoidable things happen and homework can't be completed, but I am hoping you will all make a great effort to do what you can each week.

A newsletter will be uploaded by the end of the week with details of this term's topic.  I cannot wait to get started as it's going to be a cracker!

Have a lovely evening and see you tomorrow

Diolch

Croeso i’r Tryfan

Welcome to your new class – Tryfan. I hope you have had a wonderful summer and enjoyed lots of time with family and friends. It was lovely to spend time with you before the summer and am really looking forward to the year ahead and the fun we are going to have together.

This class page will be updated at the end of each week. However, if there is any urgent information that needs to be shared with you beforehand, I will contact you via text.  Please check the main page for general school information and important dates for the term.

Children will need a drink and a healthy snack every day.  Please ensure they are labelled with your child’s name and that snacks are nut free.  All clothing should also be labelled to avoid any confusion and lost property.

Our PE day will on a Tuesday again this year and pupils are expected to come to school dressed in their PE kit. They will need plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers. PE will start next week on Tuesday 12th September.

This week will be about settling into our new classroom, catching up with each other after our break away, looking at our class rules and creating our class charter.

I am looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

If you are able to, please support this initiative by walking to school as many times as you are able to.  In class we will be asking how long each person who has walked has taken and we aim find out how many 'get active' minutes we will achieve as a whole school over the week by walking to school.

World Down Syndrome Day - Wear odd/crazy socks to school

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day.

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 2st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school! They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy! The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

How you can help your child at home

Please encourage your child to read as much as possible.  Even 10 minutes every evening will improve your child's fluency.  Questioning your child on what they have read will develop understanding.

I kindly ask that you ensure your child is reading their school book and returning it to school with a comment in the yellow reading record.  They can then change their book and bring a new one home.

Spring topic - This is Me!

This term our topic is called 'This is Me' and has an expressive arts focus.  We are focusing on portraits and will look at the skills involved in creating our own.  We have already started on developing our sketching skills, using different techniques such as blending, hatching and cross-hatching and using tone and shadow.  We will then move on to colour, before changing our focus to abstract portraits.  Along with developing our artistic skills, we will write reviews of different pieces of artwork, look at the shapes within abstract art and look at costings of art and exhibitions.

Last week we were lucky enough to be visited by a local artist at school and we have also planned a trip planned to Cardiff Museum to visit the art gallery on the 16th February.  Further details of this will be uploaded to the class web page soon.

Miss Parfitt

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Couscous
  14. Tinned Vegetables
  15. Instant mash
  16. Tinned potatoes
  17. Tinned Meat
  18. Tinned Fish
  19. Tinned Fruit
  20. Jam
  21. Sugar
  22. Biscuits / snack bars
  23. Vegetable Oil
  24. Tea Bags
  25. Coffee
  26. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by the morning of Thursday 20th October.

Thank you for your continued support

School Council

On Friday the 14th of October the Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving at school.  The children will have an opportunity on this day to view the books available to purchase.  THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PURCHASE ANY BOOKS ON THIS DAY.

Spellings

Pupils should continue to work on the same spelling list that they were completing before the summer.  They do not need to go back to the first list.  If you are unsure which list this is, or if you need a new copy of the list, please let me know and I will send this home.  Spell checks will begin on the 19th September and will take place every Monday.

End of day pick-up

A polite reminder that when picking your child up at the end of the day, please follow the arrows on the floor and continue moving until you reach the front of the queue.  When you reach the front, your child will come and greet you.  If your child is not yet out on the yard, or if you need to speak to your child's teacher, can we kindly ask that you stand near the sheltered outdoor classroom to keep the line moving?  This will ensure that teachers can see pupils leave the yard safely with their adults.  Thank you for your cooperation.

School trip

As part of our new topic we have arranged a trip to visit Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday 21st September.  The trip will consist of a tour of the bridge and a workshop where the children will have an opportunity to make their own bridge through problem solving and budgeting activities. We will need to be leaving the school at 8:30am to be able to be there by 10am for us to make the most of the opportunity.  We will return to school by 3pm.

Due to the increasing costs of fuel our wonderful PTA have agreed to support school trips this term by contributing £200 towards the cost of the coach.  Their generous contribution has meant that the cost per child is reduced to support us in these financially difficult times.  The school has also made a contribution.  We ask for a contribution from youselves of £12.50 per child.  It will be a great experience for the children to learn all about Clifton Suspension Bridge.  Please click on the link below for payment.

Reading books will be changed on a Friday, but will need to be returned to school on the Thursday.  However, if your child completes their book before Thursday and wishes to change it sooner, this can be done any day of the week.

Please can I kindly ask that you write a comment in the reading diary about your child's fluency, expression and understanding of the text?  A lot of the children have asked if they can write in the diary themselves.  This is fine and I love to read comments from the children about what they have read but, if they wish to do this, please can this be as well as a comment from parent/guardian, not instead of?

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

World Down Syndrome Day - Monday 21st March 2022

The #LotsOfSocks campaign exists to raise awareness about Down syndrome.

#LotsOfSocks help us to get people talking on World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), celebrated each year on 21 March.

All you need to do is choose some socks that are going to get noticed - they might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy and wear them to school next Monday!

If someone asks you about your socks you can tell them, "I'm wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome"

Get yourself informed so you can tell them about Down syndrome.

Be a part of the global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.

Rights Morning - 9th March

As part of our weekly rights session in KS2, we have decided that this week's articles will link to war and conflict.  With the ever increasing news coverage of the heart-breaking situation in Ukraine, and the increased number of questions coming from our pupils, we feel it is important to discuss what is happening.  Years 3 to 6 will take part in discussion activities and circle time sessions where their feelings and fears will be addressed. Obviously each session will be age appropriate dependent on the year group and the amount of information discussed will differ from years 3 to 6.

As a school, we feel it is important to address this matter but also offer support to the people of Ukraine.  We are therefore asking for a £1 donation to the charity UNICEF who we are working closely with as we continue on our rights journey.  UNICEF currently have an emergency Ukraine crisis appeal and are one of the many humanitarian charities calling for an immediate ceasefire.

How UNICEF is helping children in Ukraine?

They have been working tirelessly to keep children safe since this conflict began eight years ago and they are determined to remain in Ukraine to reach the most vulnerable children and families.

  • They are helping to provide families with access to clean water and healthy food.
  • They are delivering lifesaving supplies to support families who have been forced to flee and are working closely with local health facilities to ensure they have the vital supplies needed.
  • They are helping to make sure that child protection services continue.
  • They are working with our partners and the UNHCR to assess the refugee situation across neighbouring countries.
  • In neighbouring countries they are delivering Blue Dot safe spaces with our partners, which will provide care and support, information to families seeking refuge, psychosocial support, water and sanitation supplies, safe spaces for mothers and children, protection for unaccompanied and separated children and more.

We thank you for your continued support and appreciate any donations that are given.

Kind Regards

KS2 Staff

Christmas shows

Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall.

They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded.

They must not be shared on any form of social media.

Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online.

It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes, that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

‘Only by working together, can we achieve our aims.’

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week is an annual event that raises awareness of bullying, and one that we in Penygawsi feel is important to be highlighted. This year's theme is 'One Kind Word' and recognises the difference that one kind comment or gesture can make on someone's day.

To begin Anti-Bullying Week, Odd Socks Day is on Monday 15th September.  Please can pupils wear odd socks to school on this day to help us celebrate our differences, recognise that everyone is unique and to remind us that everyone needs to be treated with kindness and respect.

Educational visit - 18th November

We have been fortunate enough to secure an educational visit from a group called 'Divergent' for the children on Thursday 18th November at school.  They will work with years 5 and 6 in our class bubbles.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance pupils drama and Oracy skills and will link to our World War 2 topic.  This will support us with the end product of our topic, which will see us showcase our Oracy skills as we plan to act out one area of World War 2 that we have researched this term.

We kindly ask for a contribution of £5 to cover the cost of the workshop, which should be paid online.

Children in Need is on Friday 19th November.  Our School Council and Super Ambassadors met last week to discuss how we can safely celebrate the occasion this year.  It was decided that we will celebrate in class bubbles but with a whole school theme.

This year, School Council have decided that our theme will be heroes.  This means pupils can come to school dress as their favourite hero for the day.  This might be a super hero or a real life hero.  If you don't have a costume at home or you haven't got a hero in mind, pupils can come to school dressed in their pyjama's instead.  We kindly ask for a donation of £1 to go towards the charity.

HARVEST FESTIVAL 2021

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  It is going to be a little different this year and we will be delivering our Harvest items in our class bubbles virtually.  The pupils will enjoy the assembly from the comfort of their classrooms with each class celebrating in their own unique way.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags

We have been nominated to take part in the Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme. We can collect tokens which can be exchanged for gardening equipment for our school.

For every £10 you spend (in store or online), you will get a 'grow' token which can be donated to a school of your choice.  You need to download the MyMorrisons app to start collecting and to nominate the school you would like to donate your 'grow' tokens to.

This is a great opportunity to get some new gardening equipment for our school allotment, so please tell any family or friends who shop in Morrisons all about it! Diolch.

Spell checks will take place every week on a Monday, starting next week, 20th September.  Please support your child learning their spellings throughout the week at home.  To have a thorough understanding of the words, your child should work on the following: reading each word, knowing the meaning of each word, spelling on paper, spelling verbally and putting each word into sentences.

Wythnos 2 - 13th September

Evening all,

We had a great first week in Tryfan, getting to know each other and setting ourselves up for the year ahead!  We created our class charter, enjoyed a wellbeing Wednesday, considered what it means to be a leader and worked on our team building skills.

Here is the information you will need for this week:

Dydd Mawrth/Tuesday

Please wear PE kit to school.  You will have your Fit For Fun session and your first music session today.

Dydd Mercher/Wednesday

The first learning log task will be uploaded to j2homework.  Homework will be set and completed in the same way as it was last year, using the Hwb platform.  Completed learning log tasks should be uploaded by the following Monday, 20th September.

Spellings

Last week we completed our spelling assessments and your child will come home with a spelling list at the start of this week.  I will update this page with further information on spellings once I have given lists out. Please check the page when you have received the list.

Croeso nol!

Welcome to Tryfan's class page.  This is where you will find the information you need about class each week.  I will update every Sunday evening with any updates.

Hello from me, Miss Parfitt.  Here I am this weekend with my new alpaca friend, Bryn!   I am looking forward to teaching year 5 this year and getting to know everyone.

I hope everyone has had a lovely summer and made lots of memories with family and friends.  I can't wait to hear about how you've all spent your summer break.  I hope you are all looking forward to coming back to school tomorrow.  I can't wait to get stuck in and have some fun as we start the next part of your journey.

Everyday your child will need to bring:

- A healthy snack for break time (please remember, no nuts!)

- A bottle of water.  Please no squash or fizzy drinks.

- A packed lunch, if not having school dinners.

Please clearly label all items of clothing and bottles/snack bottles.

PE will be on a Tuesday and will start this week (7th September).  Please can your child wear PE kit to school every Tuesday, like they did last year?

I will send out further information about our topic and plans for the autumn term later this week.

Enjoy your Sunday evening and I will see everyone bright and early tomorrow morning!

W/C 26th April

This week we are continuing our theme of climate change and will be writing our letters to Mark Drakeford, demanding action to tackle climate change here in Wales.

We are beginning to look to the future and the children would like to design and then create a model 'house for the future' using recyclable materials. However, to do this we will need your help. If you have any spare cardboard boxes, clean plastic bottles etc, could they please be sent in with your child to ensure that we have enough resources available for our models. Any spare materials will be recycled here in school.

Remember P.E kit will be needed again on Tuesday and should be worn to school.

Homework will be shared with the children again this Wednesday.

Diolch,

Mr Thomas

Welcome back everyone! I hope that you all had a brilliant Easter and made the most of the nice weather we have had these past few weeks. Hopefully you have had plenty of rest and are all ready to begin Summer term.

This term our new topic is 'Together Stronger'. The children have decided that they would like to find out about how groups of people have come together to prove stronger as a collective.  We will try and learn from these success stories to see how we can become 'Together Stronger' as a group.

With a focus on expressive arts this term, the children wanted to go down the route of film and digital media for their end product. They wanted to create a short film to share their findings. They will write a script, record and edit videos and audio, produce posters and infographics and get creative by adding effects to their video. We will share our end product with you at the end of the Summer term.

Please could children continue to wear PE kit to school on a Tuesday for our PE sessions with Mitch.

I look forward to seeing you all in the morning to find out how your Easter holidays were and to see how you have been getting on with your sponsored read. Remember, drop off times and locations will remain the same as before Easter.

See you all in the morning,

Mr Thomas

W/C 22nd March

With Easter just around the corner, we are finally in the last week of term!

A reminder that this week we will be doing PE on Tuesday morning so please come in to school wearing your PE kit and a water bottle.

Easter Sponsored Read

As part of our school vision to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading for enjoyment, we have decided to do a Sponsored Read during the Easter break.  The money raised will help to fund the expansion of our school library.

At the end of the week, we will be sharing the Sponsor form and explanation of how to engage your child in the Readathon!

The documents will be shared via the J2e for your child's class on the HWB platform that we used during the Online Learning.  Paper copies are available if you need them, please let me know.

You can choose how you would like to sponsor your child, either an amount per minute/hour/chapter/book or you could have fun trying to get a line or a house using the Bingo Reading Card that is also in the folder.

The child who raises the most sponsorship money will receive a prize of a new book!

Diolch,

Mr Thomas

We had lots of fun in Dosbarth Tryfan on Friday, wearing mismatch socks to support World Down Syndrome Day and sharing jokes with Blwyddyn 3 for Comic Relief.

Good evening everyone. The time has finally come to return to school after 10 weeks of distance learning. I am looking forward to meeting you all properly and will see some of you tomorrow, some Tuesday and then we will all be back in together from Wednesday.

Thank you for all of your hard work that you have submitted since January and for adapting to distance learning so well. A big thank you also to your families at home who have supported you so well while they have had so much on themselves these past few months.

Information has been sent out for the phased return next week.  In case you haven't see it, please see below:

Pupils with surname A - L on Monday (Arrive between 8.50am and 9.00am. Pick up between 3.10pm and 3.20pm)

Pupils with surname M - Z on Tuesday (Arrive between 9.00am and 9.10am. Pick up between 3.20pm and 3.30pm)

If you have a sibling in FP please enter/leave the school through the FP yard.  All other KS2 pupils to enter/leave via the KS2 side gate (via path)

On Sunday 21st of March it is World Down Syndrome Day.  As a school, we always raise awareness of this day, and this year is no different.  On Friday 19th of March we are asking that all pupils come to school wearing 'lots of socks', crazy socks or maybe mismatched socks.  Let's get people talking about Down Syndrome!

The PTA have organised an Easter Raffle this year and the children will be given tickets to sell on Monday/Tuesday. Apologies for the short notice but can we have them returned by Thursday.

Many Thanks.

See you all soon,

Mr Thomas

Spring Term - Love Where You Live

This term our topic is 'Love Where You Live'.  We will be looking at plants and how they grow as well as trying to grow our own when we return to school. We will be writing diary entries based on the area where we live and after half term, will be studying stories from different cultures.  We are going to set up an investigation to find out the best conditions for germination to take place and will be carrying this out both in school and at home.   In Maths we will look at measuring, fractions, decimals and percentages. In Welsh this term we will be studying 'Y Dref' where we will use a variety of sentence patterns to describe our town.

Welcome to our new class page for Dosbarth Tryfan.  Here you will find information about your child's class, rather than the blog which was used previously. We will share updates of our learning, so that you can see what we have been doing in class as well as any important news that needs to be shared.

Diolch,

Mr Thomas, Mrs Ross & Miss Mountstephen
