What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

Dydd Gwener - Friday

What do we know ? What do we want to find out?

Capturing moments of Autumn 🍂

Our new topic is ‘Capture the moment’ ✨📸

Wow 🤩, what an incredible first week we've had! I couldn't be prouder of how quickly the children have settled in and embraced our learning adventures. They've tackled their bubble tasks with enthusiasm and even conquered two independent peg challenges during our 'Shine Time' ✨.

Throughout the week, we've delved into 'Our Rights as Children' and collaboratively crafted our very own class charter. The children have expressed their creativity by painting self-portraits, inscribing their names in speech bubbles, and reflecting on what they aspire to improve this year.

On Friday, the excitement reached new heights as we unveiled our captivating theme for this term, 'Capture the Moment' 📸🎞️ – an exploration of discovering beauty in everyday and family life. Together, we embarked on an exhilarating scavenger hunt that led us to Teddy Twt. Teddy left behind enchanting memory jars, which allowed us to preserve cherished moments spent together outdoors.

We're bubbling with anticipation as we kickstart our learning journey, nurturing budding artists, photographers, and creators!

(Regarding photograph permissions, I'll be sure to double-check on Monday and share more snapshots from our thrilling week. Apologies for the oversight today; we were all so engrossed in the fun!)

🎉Croeso yn ol - Welcome Back 🎉

I hope you've had a fantastic summer filled with exciting adventures and lots of laughter. Now, it's time to embark on a new adventure together - our Dosbarth Caerau journey! 🌟

I'm beyond excited to be your teacher this year, and I've been eagerly waiting to see your friendly faces back in the classroom. This is a special year where we'll continue to learn, explore, and grow together.

In our classroom, you'll discover the joy of reading amazing stories, solving interesting math problems, and discovering the wonders of the world around us. We'll paint with colours, play games, and make discoveries that will make your eyes sparkle with wonder.

But here's the best part: you'll make new friends who will be there to cheer you on and share in your adventures. Together, we'll create a supportive and caring class family where everyone is important.

So, are you ready to make new memories, ask lots of questions, and become even more amazing than you already are? I know I am, and I can't wait to see the incredible things we'll achieve together this year. 📚🌎🧡

I can’t wait to share our brand new topic with you all ✨

Here's to an incredible year of learning and laughter!

See you all on Wednesday

Pupils return to school

Every day, please ensure your child brings a healthy snack and a drink to school. It's important that these items are labeled, and we kindly request that snacks are nut-free to accommodate all children.

Additionally, we ask that you label all of your child's clothing to prevent any mix-ups.

Our PE day is Thursday. On this day, children should come to school dressed in their PE kit, which includes plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket or hoody, and trainers. This will begin next week, starting on September 14th.

I aim to update the school website with new information every Sunday evening. For any urgent matters, I will send text messages to keep you informed. Please check the main page of the website for general school information and important dates for the term.

This week, we will focus on helping your child settle into our new classroom, getting to know their classmates, reviewing our class rules, and creating our class charter.

SCHOOL TRIP - ROYAL MINT

Dosbarth Pen -y- Fan’s trip to the Royal Mint Experience.

In line with our topic based on locality, we have booked a trip to the Royal Mint Experience on Wednesday 5th July. We have organised a tour, a workshop and an opportunity for each child to strike their own coin.

We have used the generous donation each class gets from the PTA towards the cost of this trip. This donation has covered the cost of the tour and the coin for each child. Therefore, we ask for a donation from you to cover the cost of the bus for your child which is £8.15 each.

The payment link, which has been posted on our webpage, is now open for you to pay. If you are able to volunteer for this trip, then please let us know by Wednesday at the latest.

A message from our new class bear!

Hello Dosbarth Pen y Fan!

My Name is Ted. My Friends call me ‘Travelling Ted’ as I love to go on adventures and visit different places!

I arrived in your class about a week ago and I have watched you all go out and about on walks around Talbot Green and Llantrisant and I have heard you talk about all the things you have seen. I am so sad that I didn’t come too!

You are all such kind friends in this class, I wondered if you could take turns to take me on local adventures? I have never visited this area before. What can you do here? What could I see? Where could I visit? What could I eat?

When I visit your house, could you take me on a local adventure so I can learn more about where you live? You could take me shopping, to the park or to one of your after school activities for example. Have a look at this booklet to see where I have already been, can you think of somewhere different so I can see as many places and amenities before we all enjoy our summer holiday break?

I am so excited to be a ‘Travelling Ted’ again!

Diolch Pen y Fan,

Ted.

Ted will be moving between children three times a week to ensure he visits everyone in the class.

Out Monday - return Wednesday morning

Out Wednesday - return Friday morning

Out Friday - return Monday morning

Please remember to return him so everyone has Ted for the same amount of time.

Please can you ensure that your child's reading book is returned weekly on their allocated reading day.  Please comment on how your child is reading at home in their reading diary.

Labelled clothing/personal items

On Friday we put approximately 8 jumpers/cardigans on a table outside the class door with no names on them.  None of these jumpers were collected.  If you are missing a school jumper/cardigan, please ask a member of staff on the door if you can have a look at what is left in the class box.  As the weather is getting warmer (at last! :0) the children will start to take off their jumpers in class more and more.  Please can you ensure that all items are clearly labelled.

New Homework set - Language homework.  We have noticed a decline in the number of pupils who are completing homework tasks over the last few weeks.  It is vital that homework is completed weekly, as this reinforces skills that have been taught in class.  Occasionally, we may ask the pupils to do something that will feed into the week's work, e.g. gather information and write facts.  Without this homework preparation, it is very difficult for your child to complete the classwork.

We will be celebrating the King's Coronation by completing a carousel of activities within the Foundation Phase in the morning.  In the afternoon, we will be celebrating with a whole school picnic outside.  Your child is invited to bring a plate of food to school with them for this occasion.  Please ensure that the plate is clearly labelled and that it does not contain anything that needs to be refrigerated.  Your child is also welcome to wear red, white, and blue clothing of their choice to school for this celebration.

Big Spelling Information

In the Summer term of Year 1, your child is introduced to 'Big Spelling'.  All pupils are assessed and given a set of words they must learn weekly.  Last week all pupils were assessed.  Tomorrow your child will bring a sheet of paper home with them with a variety of lists of words on it.  Please help your child to learn List 1 by next Tuesday (this is normally a Monday, but it's Bank Holiday next week).  If your child has 9 or 10 of their words correct then they will move on to List 2 for the following week.  If your child has 8 or below, they will be expected to learn the same list again.  If your child has moved on to the next list, you will find a post-it note in your child's bag.  The purpose of this is not to learn the words for the test, but to transfer the spellings in to their daily writing too.  Once your child has learnt how to spell the words, please work with them to put the words into short sentences.  Please do not compare what list your child is on with their friends, they all develop at different times and all have different strengths.  We are extremely proud of each and every one of them.

We have an extremely busy week ahead.  Please see below details for the Movie Premiere and walk to Billy Wynt.

Movie Premiere at 2 pm in the school hall for pupils and parents.  You should have all received an invitation to the Movie Premiere on Friday.  We are excited for you to see what the children have produced from their script-writing skills, directing, acting, and digital skills to put the movies together.  We will also be using this as an opportunity to assess the pupils' money skills.  There will be an opportunity for the pupils to buy and sell some sweets, crisps, drinks, teas, and coffee (for adults) to eat whilst watching their movies,  so please can we ask that you bring some very small change to help with the ease of the pupils' calculations e.g 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p.  Pupils are welcome to wear their smart clothes to school for this red carpet-event. We look forward to seeing you!

Trip/Walk to the Billy Wynt.  Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help.  If anyone else can help, I am looking for one more volunteer for the 9.15 - 10.30 walk.  Please let me know on Monday if you can help out.  Please can all pupils wear leggings/tracksuit bottoms and school uniform t-shirt and jumper for the walk.  Please bring your wellies to school in a clearly labelled bag to change for the walk.  Unfortunately, we never know what the weather in Wales is going to be like, so please bring a waterproof coat to school with you on this day.  I can see that several pupils still do not have consent for the walk.  If you have not completed, it is important that this is completed by Monday so your child can attend.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 2st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school!

They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

I look forward to seeing you all in your odd socks on Tuesday!

Class trip to the cinema

Thank you all for the positive response to the class trip to the cinema to watch a private viewing of 'Puss in Boots - The Last Wish'.  We are pleased to inform you that we have booked the trip for Wednesday 15th February.

This term our Expressive Arts topic concentrates on photography, video, drama, fairy tales and fairy tales from a different perspective so the film will match perfectly with the work we are completing in class.

The visit is booked for Wednesday 15th February and we are asking for a contribution of £10 towards the cost of the cinema and bus.  As you may be aware, all school trip payments now take place online as this is the preferred method suggested by RCT local authority.  To pay your contribution to the trip, please follow the link below.

We will need to leave school as close to 9:00am as possible to get to Cardiff Bay in time for our arrival time of 9.30, so please try to arrive at school at 8.50am when the gates open. We will be returning to school at approximately 12.30pm, so your child will be able to have their lunch at school and you will be able to order a school lunch as usual.

Children will need to wear school uniform and a coat suited to the weather. Please provide a snack and drink for the cinema in labelled disposable packaging so we can dispose of them in the cinema and not have to worry about anything getting lost or left behind

We are asking that payments be paid through our webpage link by Friday 11th February. Please also complete the form at the bottom of the letter sent home (7/2/23) and return to school by Friday 11th February, also.

Spring Topic - In the Spotlight

This term our topic is called 'In the Spotlight' and has an Expressive Arts focus.  We will be starting the term with photography skills and learning how to focus, use filters, deciding on whether to take portrait or landscape photographs.  We will also be having a visit from the school photographer John Newman, who will be speaking to the pupils about his job and showing them some of his equipment.  After half term, our focus will move to video recording.  We will link these skills with our literacy skills and hoping to create a short movie based on a fairy tale.  At the end of the term the children will be holding a premiere of their work for you to come and watch.  How exciting!!!!  They will be writing their own story to base their movie on, making and selling the tickets and using their acting skills.  Along with a visit from the school photographer, we are also planning a visit to the cinema to watch the new Puss in Boots film and a workshop from a story teller.  We have an action packed term for the pupils, where they will learn a number of new skills as well as consolidating skills they have already been taught. We can't wait to share their work with you!

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school bythe morning of Thursday 20th October.

Thank you for your continued support

Some Photos From This Week

Everyone gave us a great talent show on 'Well-being Wednesday' this week. We were super impressed by the range of different talents that were shared. We had martial arts, rugby skills, singers, mathematicians, gymnasts, crafters, dancers to name a few!

We used instruments to keep the the beat of a metronome. We listened carefully to it. If it went faster we played faster, if it played slower then we played slower.

This week was Welsh guided reading week. We were super impressed at the brilliant effort to read Welsh books and we heard some great pronunciation!

Some of us used a random story sentence starter generator to write and up level sentences in pairs.

We wrote our holiday news and we followed picture instructions on how to draw African animals.

We worked together in the Reading Corner to match safari themed sentences and pictures.

We found half of food, objects, shapes and numbers in maths.

In Speaker's Corner we used adjectives to describe African animals to our friends who then had to guess the animal we described.

Wythnos 19 - 6 June 2022

Beth sy'n digwydd yr wythnos yma?

This week we will be focusing on how we can use music to express story-telling.  The children will work in groups to compose a phrase of music to represent part of a story.  They will do this by using symbols and drawings.  They will then perform their finished piece and give feedback to their peers.  We will also be looking at Tinga Tinga art, writing stories with a beginning, middle and end and finding halves and quarters in a practical situation in Maths.

Lost Property

Please can you ensure that your child's clothing and items are clearly labelled (jumpers, coats, hats, PE kit, water bottles).  At the end of last half term, we had a number of items left in class, that were not claimed and were not labelled.  We know that you spend a lot of money on these items!

Teachers

Mrs Farrell will be teaching Monday to Wednesday for this half term and Mrs Black will be teaching Thursday and Friday.  We are very fortunate that Mrs Bevan is also staying with us, while Miss Key is off.

Dydd Llun - Monday

Year 1 and 2 Big Spell check will take place.  Your child will bring a post-it note home if they have successfully moved on to the next list of spellings.

Dydd Mercher - Wednesday

This week for our Rights and Well-being Wednesday we are looking at Article 29 – Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. The children are going to look at the skills they have developed over the year and what they feel they need to improve on. We will also be giving the children the opportunity to share a talent/ability they have to the rest of the class e.g. some martial arts moves, singing, telling jokes, football skills, drawing. If they need to bring anything into school to help demonstrate their skill, then they are more than welcome to bring it in on Wednesday. Please ensure everything is labelled with their name.

PE - Please wear your kit to school.

We are looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning and hearing all about what you have done over half term!

The Platinum Jubilee

We had so much fun finding out about and celebrating the Jubilee. The photos below show some of the things we got up to in the last fortnight.

We painted images of the Queen in the style of Andy Warhol.

We coloured and wrote cards for the Queen. Mrs Farrell sent them to Buckingham Palace! We wonder if we will get a reply?

We designed our own afternoon teas. They looked delicious!

We used loose parts to decorate crowns.

We read information about the Queen, made fact files and wrote speech bubbles using the facts we founds out.

We enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations in the hall and in our class. We had lots of fun!

Last Week – Holi Celebrations

All the children and teachers had a fantastic week celebrating the Holi Festival. The children particularly enjoyed making their tie dye t-shirts. They took their inspiration from the images of the Colour Run, they chose one of the five designs, then created the beautiful patterns using dye and elastic bands.

The Colour Run was the highlight of the week for us all. The children thoroughly enjoyed running around the yard, whilst being covered in powder paint and lots of water! The smiles and laughter off all the children and the teachers included, was just amazing!

Holi Festival

We have been learning about festivals.  As part of this learning, we would like the children to experience an Indian Holi festival.
On Wednesday 11th May we will be recreating an Indian Holi festival outside.
The adults will throw paint powder with the opportunity for the children to run through. This will mirror a traditional Holi festival. We will be aiming to throw the powder at shoulder height, but they are more than welcome to bring sunglasses or swimming goggles to protect their eyes.
Please look at the following link to have an idea of what the children will be doing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7NZEtivn0s
We would like the children to bring a spare set of old clothes and shoes in a carrier bag on the day, ready for the Holi festival. These clothes will most certainly get covered in paint powder! The paint powder is non-toxic and specifically designed for this purpose, but we cannot guarantee that the colour will come out so please wear really old clothes and shoes.

The online form will need to be filled in, the link is

Selling Our Fabric Bags

The children really enjoyed our ‘Save the Planet’ topic. To complete the topic we will be selling the fabric bags you ordered this week. The children worked so hard throughout the topic and have really gained an insight to the damage that rubbish is doing to our planet. They are also able to talk about ways that we can help. The bags they designed look great and we hope to see them being used around Llantrisant! We are so proud of what they have achieved.

We will be selling our bags under the shelter outside our class after school during the first week back. The children will be selling them to you in groups and on different days, please see timetable below.

You will be able to come on to the yard just after 3pm to come to our shop and to look at some of the great artwork of sea creatures the children produced earlier on in the term inspired by ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ using recycled materials from home.

Summer Term

Our new topic for the summer term is called ‘Feel the Beat’. It is based on the Expressive Arts part of the curriculum and we will be looking at the elements of music and dance.

Over the term we will be investigating different festivals and carnivals from around the world; why they are celebrated and how they are celebrated.

We will be starting in Wales this week and will be answering the question ‘What is a festival and what happens there?’ by looking at the ‘Green Man’ festival that takes place every August in Brecon.

On Friday we will be holding a festival on the school yard with some live music, a circus skills visitor and stalls set up with activities. Please wear something green or ‘festival’ themed clothes to school on Friday.

We will also be making some ‘green’ themed food to eat during the festival that will include the following ingredients – please inform us before Thursday if there are any allergies or if you do not wish for your child to take part in the cooking sessions.

Ingredients – white chocolate, rice krispies, golden syrup, green food colouring, white bread, butter, creamed cheese, cucumber.

Big Spell

This term, the children in Year 1 will start their ‘Big Spelling’ journey. This week we will complete an initial assessment to see what list they need to start on, they will bring their list home on Friday. On the list, there are lots of sets of words. They will work on one set at a time, starting with the first set, and have 5, 10 or 15 words to learn every week.

We would like you to practise these at home and they will also have opportunities to practise them in school throughout the week before their spell check in school on a Monday. If they have 9 or 10 out of 10 (or 4 or 5 out of 5) when tested, they can move on to the next set of

spellings on their sheet which will then be tested the following week. We will let the children know whether to continue to practise the set they were on or to move on to learn the next set. If you have any questions about the Big Spell, please let us know.

Advanced notice – During the fortnight beginning 2/5/22 we will be looking at tie-dye and we ask that the children bring in a white t-shirt that they will be able to tie-dye and then bring back home. Diolch.

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

World Down Syndrome Day - Monday 21st March 2022

The #LotsOfSocks campaign exists to raise awareness about Down syndrome.

#LotsOfSocks help us to get people talking on World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), celebrated each year on 21 March.

All you need to do is choose some socks that are going to get noticed - they might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy and wear them to school next Monday!

If someone asks you about your socks you can tell them, "I'm wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome"

Get yourself informed so you can tell them about Down syndrome.

Be a part of the global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We have had a fantastic term in Dosbarth Pen Y Fan. The children have settled in to their new class and new routines really well and we have been very impressed by how hard they have all been working. We are very proud of all of them and we hope you are too!

We hope you enjoy the photos and short video below. They are photos of just some of the things we have been up to during this very busy half term. Please remember that our Christmas performance is available in the shared file though your child’s J2e account too.

A big thank you for your generous gifts, kind words and support that you have given this term.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope that you can all enjoy time together with your families. Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you all again in the new year!

Mrs Farrell, Miss Smith and Miss Key.

Pen-Y-Fan’s Christmas Video!

The children are very excited to share their Christmas video with you all. We recorded it last Friday, so apologies if any children were absent that day.

The video will be shared with you today by 4pm via Hwb. We will share the video to your child’s account, so you will need their username and password to access it.

Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall.  They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded.

They must not be shared on any form of social media. Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online. It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes, that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

‘Only by working together, can we achieve our aims.’

Wythnos 12 - w/b 29th November

Thursday is our trip to Llanciach Fawr. Thank you for paying online, we understand this is a new process. As well as the donation towards the trip, it is vital that we have the section from the bottom of the letter which is your signature showing that you are willing for your child to come on the trip with us. Please bring this into school ASAP if you haven’t already done so.

We aim to leave school as close to the beginning of the day as possible, so we would be grateful if you could arrive in school as close to 8.50 as possible.

We will be having lunch in Llanciach Fawr, so your child will need a drink, packed lunch and snack to bring with them in one bag so it’s easy for them to carry. Please also ensure they also have a coat to suit the weather.

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week is an annual UK event which aims to raise awareness of bullying and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.  At Penygawsi, we understand the importance of raising awareness during this week and providing our pupils with the tools and strength needed if they ever find themselves being bullied.

This year the theme is ‘One Kind Word’, emphasising the positive impact a small gesture or comment can have on someone else’s day.  Odd Socks Day is held on 15th November to kick off Anti-Bullying Week. This day helps us to recognise that everyone is unique and different, and that we all need kindness and respect.

Thank you for all of the interest in helping out with our class trip. To make it fair we will be pulling names out of a hat on Wednesday and will inform you of parents to attend. There is still time to volunteer, please let us know by Wednesday morning.

Class Trip Letter

Continuing with our ‘Through the Keyhole’ topic, this half term the children have decided to look at different types of celebrations that are held within the home. To link to this theme, we have organised a class trip to Llancaich Fawr. The trip will investigate ‘Christmas in the Past’ and will include a guided tour of the house and a practical workshop.

The trip will take place on Thursday 2nd December and we ask for a contribution of £7.50 towards the trip. As we are a cashless school, payments are now made through the link below.

http://www.rctcbc.gov.uk/schoolpayments

We are also looking for some volunteers to help us on the day. If you would like to put your name forward, then please let one of us know. We will send out more information closer to the date.

We are looking forward to finding out lots of interesting and unusual facts about Christmas!

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Farrell, Miss Smith and Miss Key.

Christmas Photos

On Wednesday 17th November we will be taking class Christmas photos.  Please can your child bring a Christmas item on this day to wear for the photo?  It might be a Christmas jumper/dress/t-shirt/accessory etc.

Please put it in a bag and label the item and bag with your child's name.

They will be putting the item on for the photo and then changing back into their school uniform straight afterwards.

Children in Need

As you may be aware, Children in Need is on Friday 19th November.  School Council and Super Ambassadors met last week to discuss how we can celebrate one of our most favourite days in the school calendar safely.  We have decided that the children will celebrate in their class bubbles, but everyone will come to school dressed in the same theme.

This year, School Council have decided upon HEROES as our theme.  This means children can come dressed as their most treasured hero for the day.  If you do not have a costume at home or your child does not have a specific hero, then they are welcome to come dressed in their pjs instead.  We will be asking for a £1 donation for this special charity.

Poppy Appeal

From Monday 8th November, the school council will be selling poppies and other merchandise to raise money for the British Legion at break time every day. Please see our twitter feed for further information.

Harvest Festival 2021

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  The pupils will be participating in a special harvest assembly.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by Monday 1st November 2021.

Thank you for your continued support

Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme.

We have been nominated to take part in the Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme. We can collect tokens which can be exchanged for gardening equipment for our school.

For every £10 you spend (in store or online), you will get a 'grow' token which can be donated to a school of your choice.  You need to download the MyMorrisons app to start collecting and to nominate the school you would like to donate your 'grow' tokens to.

This is a great opportunity to get some new gardening equipment for our school allotment, so please tell any family or friends who shop in Morrisons all about it! Diolch.

Reading books

We will carry on the same system used last year for reading books. Two books will be sent out every other Friday and come back in on Monday the following week giving you 10 days with the books at home. This gives you the opportunity to read the books several times if needed. During one Monday-Friday the book bags will be in kept in school, giving us the opportunity to record in them and change the books. During this time, please access Oxford Reading Buddy. (If you need a new password for Buddy, then please see Mrs Farrell at the end of the week.)

You may notice that some of the classes will have a different system to us for reading books this year, but we have found that this system works best with a job share in class. We will remind you on here when books are due back in.

Books out - Friday 17th Sept.

Books back in - Monday 27th.

Our class Autumn Term newsletter will be uploaded onto our web page by Wednesday. Here's to another fabulous week in Dosbarth Pen Y Fan!

Miss Smith

Miss Smith will be your teacher on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternate Wednesdays.

Mrs Farrell

Mrs Farrell will be your teacher on Thursdays, Fridays and alternate Wednesdays.

Miss Key

Miss Key will be in class to support you every day.

We hope you have had a lovely summer and can't wait to see you on Monday to hear all about your summer news. We hope you are all excited to return to school and ready for lots of fun and learning on the next part of your learning journey.

Our first week will focus on settling in, exploring your new classroom, and getting to know each other.

Every day, your child will need to bring:

A packed lunch (if not having school dinner)

A small, healthy snack in a sealed bag or container. (Fruit where possible please and any grapes to be cut up.)

A bottle of water.

A small bag to help them carry their things if they wish. (Only small bags please as our pegs are close together.)

Lunch boxes will be kept on our lunch trolley and the children place their snacks and drinks in our class snack boxes when they come into class every morning. If your child is having packed lunch, please keep snacks separate so they know what their snack is.

Please ensure all items are clearly labelled - bottles, snack pots, jumpers, cardigans etc.

PE will be on a Wednesday (starting this week 8th Sept) and, for the moment, children will still come in wearing their PE kits. PE is will be outside whenever possible so please choose kit appropriate to the weather e.g. tracksuit bottoms or shorts, jacket where needed.

This week looks like it could be very hot. Please ensure that your child has a sun hat and that sun cream is applied before coming into school.

We will send out any further information and what we will be learning this term soon. The website will be updated every Sunday with any important information, so please take a look at our class page every Sunday.

Miss Smith and Miss Key are excited to see your smiling faces on Monday morning and Mrs Farrell can't wait to catch up with you and see how you are all settling in on Wednesday!

As we are coming to the end of the school year, we will not be sending any more books home until the start of the next academic year.  Please use Oxford Reading Buddy for the next two weeks to practise your reading.  You could also read some of your favourite books you have at home too.  Mrs Farrell will be updating levels on Oxford Buddy next week to ensure they match the level of books that have been sent home recently.

Only two weeks left, can you believe it?!

Let's make this week the best yet!

Have a lovely weekend and see you Monday.

School Traffic Survey

Our school is working in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCTCBC) and WEPCO (the design and delivery partner) on a school travel plan. A school travel plan is a range of measures that aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport use;
  • Improve road safety;
  • Reduce traffic and pollution;
  • Improve levels of health and fitness; and
  • Raise awareness of road safety, health and environmental issues.

An important part of developing the travel plan is understanding how and why everyone travels to school in the way they do.

The survey is now open and you're invited to have your say! Please note that a separate link is provided for pupils, staff and parents and each survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. By gaining a better understanding of your current travel patterns and choices, we can work towards a more sustainable future and ensure that each individual voice is heard during the design process.  Please click on the link below and support your child in completing the survey.

Pen-Y-Fan's Butterfly Experience - Butterfly Emerging

Still image for this video
We have thoroughly enjoyed being caterpillar detectives over the past few weeks and watching our furry friends weave their pupas and then transform into the most beautiful butterflies. We were lucky enough to watch some of the butterflies emerge from the pupas, eat their fruit and flap their wings as they grew in strength ready to be set free. Then Friday came and it was time to send our butterflies off into the wild. What an experience! It is certainly one we will never forget!

Big Spelling Test

This week is our Sports Day. We are aiming to have it on Tuesday morning however as the British weather can be unreliable, we may need to change this day.  Therefore, please send your child in their sports kit all week.  We appreciate it is going to be a different type of Sports Day this year with no parent spectators but we promise to give the children a fun experience to remember.  As always, we will take lots of pictures and videos and post them on here for you to see all the fun and laughter.

This term, the children in Year 1 will start their ‘Big Spelling’ journey. We have done an initial assessment to see what list they need to start on, they brought these home on Friday. On the list, there are eight sets of words.  They will work on one set at a time, starting with the first set, and have 5, 10 or 15 words to learn every week.

We would like you to practise these at home and they will also have opportunities to practise them in school throughout the week before their spell check in school on a Friday. If they have 9 or 10 out of 10 (or 4 or 5 out of 5) when tested, they can move on to the next set of spellings on their sheet which will then be tested the following week. We will send a text every Friday (or over the weekend) to let you know whether to continue to practise the set they were on or to move on to learn the next set. If you have any questions about the Big Spell, please let us know.

Click on the link below which will take you to a video that explains how to practise spellings using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method.

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

As the weather is due to remain warm, please send your child into school every day with a hat, a refillable drinks bottle and apply sunscreen before attending school.  If your child needs further sunscreen applying throughout the day, please let us know.

Here's to a fun filled week Pen-Y-Fan.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you Monday morning.

Wythnos 8 - Week Beginning 7th June

Croeso Nol Pawb! We hope you have all had a lovely half term and enjoyed lots of fun family time.  How luck have we been with the wonderful weather we have had.  It has been so lovely to get out and about in the fresh air and sunshine.  Now it is time to put our thinking caps back on and get ready for a fun packed busy half term.

Beth Sy'n Digwydd Yr Wythnos Hon?

As Sports Day is quickly approaching we are going to make the most of this beautiful weather and parctise our activities every day.  Therefore can all children wear PE kit every day this week please?  There will be no specific PE day, each group will have a chance to carry out sports day activities throughout the week.

New reading books sent home - return to school Monday 21st June

Please be aware that the hot weather is here to stay for some time.  Therefore, can we please ask that you send your child to school with a refillable drinks bottle, wearing sunscreen and a hat?

As you may be aware, we have been collecting clothing and shoes over the last few months to donate to Dragon Bags.  This initiative has been chosen to help raise funds for the school.  For every kilo of clothes we donate, we get 40p for the school.  So far we have raised almost £200 and the bin is getting fuller by the day again and will soon be ready to be emptied and weighed.  we are hoping we can empty it at least once before the end of term. Therefore, if you have any unwanted clothing or shoes at home, please send them in.  All items must be bagged and the bag must be able to be tied shut.  Donations can be dropped off at the gate where your child enters the school each day or at the school reception.  We thank you in advance for your support.

Busy End of Term

Take a look at the fun we had the week running up to and during our Colour Day party which we had to celebrate the end of our Mrs Rainbow Topic.  We thoroughly enjoyed this topic but are very much excited to start our new one this half term.  Keep an eye out tomorrow Pen-Y-Fan, there may be a little surprise coming your way.

Mask making fun...

Discovering the wonderful work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and creating our own fruitful masterpieces...

Eating our delicious colourful snack art during our Colour Party...

Performing our Colour Dances on the outdoor stage...

We had so much fun to end the term...

We are looking forward to seeing you all in the morning and hearing about your half term adventures.

Today is Miss Jones' last day of her teaching practise for her Education Degree.  We are sure you will join us in wishing her all the best for the next chapter of her teaching journey as she graduates in July and starts looking for jobs.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed having her in class and she has become a valued member of the Pen-Y-Fan team.  We will certainly miss her.

Good luck Miss Jones and Thank you!

INSET Day today

Read Write Inc - See the documents below for the order of the RWI sounds and the words related to the sounds in Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3.

Learning to Read High Frequency Words

Big, at, can, does, go, see: these are just a few of what are commonly referred to as high frequency words or sight words. Sight words are those foundational words that appear frequently wherever you see words in print. Children should recognise sight words without sounding out the letters to build reading speed and fluency.

Sight words are unique. Many of them can't be figured out phonetically, and they are often an exception to the rules of letter–sound relationships. The best way to learn these words is through familiarity and memorisation. This does not mean, however, that you have to sit with your child and only use flashcards. The best way children learn is by engaging in playful activities. Active learning will not only help your child retain the sight words, but will also develop skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, innovation, self-regulation, and working memory.

1. Egg Hunt

You'll need paper (cut into strips), markers, and plastic eggs you can open. Write a sight word on each of the paper strips and place one strip in each egg. Hide the eggs all around your garden or in a room inside the house. Have a fun egg hunt with your child. Record one point for each egg found and two points if your child can read the sight word. How many points did your child get? Play again and see if they can get more points the next time.

2. High Frequency Word Mash Up

You will need a few beanbags, index cards, and a marker. Write a sight word on each card. Spread the word cards on the floor. Shout out words and have your child toss beanbags onto them. Next, have your child shout out the word and see if you can hit them with the beanbags.

3. High Frequency Word Bingo

Choose a grid and give your child some counters.  Read one of the HFW out loud. If your child can find the correct word, they get to place a counter in the square. When they have completed a row or a column, they have won the game - bingo!

HFW Word Bingo - Online Game

4. Word Walk

You will need white paper plates and a marker. Write a sight word on each of the plates. Create a path all around the house using the paper plates. Start at the beginning of the path and have your child read each word as they walk to the end of the path. Your child can pick up the plate each time they read a word. Repeat the game by creating a new path.

5. Magic Reveal

You will need heavy white paper such as poster board or cardboard, a white crayon, watercolor paints, and a paintbrush. Using the white crayon, write sight words in a random pattern on the paper. Next, have your child paint on the paper with watercolor paints. As the words are revealed, ask them to name the words they see.

6. Spot The Word

Write 20 HFW on 20 pieces of paper. Use words you want your child to learn. Stick the words on a wall. Get a flashlight and dim the lights. Shine the light on a word. Ask your child to read the word. Switch it up by reading a word and having your child find it with the flashlight. Make the activity even more fun using black paper and a glow-in-the-dark crayon or marker.

7. Puzzling Words

Children love puzzles! Take a 20 to 100-piece puzzle, depending on the size of puzzle your child can handle, and write a sight word on the back of each piece. Have your child pick up a piece and read the word before putting it in the puzzle. If they struggle with the word, read it to them and put the piece aside for them to come back to and try again.

8. Catch The Word

Start with 10 small balls. Tape a sight word on each ball. Play a simple game of catch, and each time your child catches a ball, they will read the word aloud. Repeat with the other balls and keep the action going.

Parents Evening

Thank you to those that have already booked their appointments for next week's parent meetings.  If you haven't done so yet, please don't worry, there is still time to do so.  The link is in the post below this one.

Please be aware that we will contact you using the first number on our system, if you think the number is different or you are not sure, please can you email the school office with the number you wish to be contacted on by the end of this week?

We have been working hard on using different sentence patterns in Welsh over the past few weeks.  Last week we were given the question Beth Sy'n Bod? which means What is wrong? We read a story about the doctor and learnt vocabulary for parts of the body.  After a word hunt, we labelled a body we had drawn on the yard and then practised answering the question.

In maths we have been practising our multiplying and dividing skills.  Last week, we used our knowledge of number to help us make arrays and repeated addition sums.  We then used these sums to help start our multiplication journey. Did you know 2+2+2 is the same as 3x2????

In the afternoons last week, we became colour investigators and we carried out 2 super experiments.  First, we made a colour spinner, also known as Newton's Disc where we talked about the colours we see in our spinner when it's moving and then when it is still.  The spinner had lots of colours on it but when it was spinning it looked white.  Do you know why?  Well Pen-Y-Fan do.  White light is made up of all the primary colours mixed together and when the disc is moving, the colours appear to mix together which then makes white.  Fascinating isn't it?!

Next, we decided to try and grow our very own rainbows.  Before we started we had to predict what was going to happen. We predicted that when the coloured felt touched the water it would spread across the paper towel which would make a rainbow.  Take a look at the pictures to see if we were right.

Here's to another fun filled week Pen-Y-Fan, as we discover more about the wonderful world of colour and read more of our class novel Mrs Rainbow.

This week is Wales' Outdoor Learning Week and we will be taking the classroom outside for the week.  We are really looking forward to getting out and about into the fresh air as much as possible throughout the week, using lots of the skills we use indoors, outdoors.  We have some lovely maths activities planned linked to sharing and an exciting challenge linked to this term's book Mrs Rainbow.

Reading

A quick reminder that reading books are not due in this week, you have them until a week Monday.  Those of you who left them on the carpet Friday afternoon will bring them home Monday.

Thank you to those who have already paid their sponsored read money.  Please be aware that if you are unable to pay your money in through PayPal, please feel free to send the money in to school with your child in a sealed envelope which is clearly labelled.  We are very proud of the children who have completed the sponsored read and some of the pupils have read a lot of books.  Bendigedig!

Here's to another great week full of fun and learning Pen-Y-Fan!

Please remember to stay focused, especially during carpet sessions as this is when valuable learning takes place.  Turn on those listening ears and switch off your volume until you need to talk about your work.

WYTHNOS 1 - W.C 12th April 2021

Welcome back everyone!  We hope that you have had a lovely Easter break, enjoying family time and that Easter Bunny came to visit with some yummy goodies.

Can you believe we are about to start our last term of the year?  This year is certainly flying by, but as they say 'Time flies when you are having fun!'  As you know, each new term brings a new brings a new topic and this term is no different.  This term our topic is called 'Together Stronger'.  We will be asking the children to think about what they want to look at during the topic this week and they will be writing their own 'I Wonder' questions which we will aim to find the answers to during the term.  Maybe you could have a chat over breakfast in the morning ready for our wonder sessions throughout the week.

Reading Books

Please remember your reading books are to stay at home for 2 weeks, therefore you do not need to return your book bags until after the Easter holidays.

Easter Sponsored Read

As part of our school vision to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading for enjoyment, we have decided to do a Sponsored Read during the Easter break.  The money raised will help to fund the expansion of our school library.

At the end of this week, we will be sharing the Sponsor form and explanation of how to engage your child in the Readathon!!  The documents will be shared via our class page on J2Launch.  Paper copies are available if you need them, please let us know if you need one by Wednesday 24th March.

You can choose how you would like to sponsor your child, either an amount per minute / hour / chapter / book or you could have fun trying to get a line or a house using the Bingo Reading Card that will also be in the folder.

The child who raises the most sponsorship money will receive a prize of a new book!!!  Have fun getting lost among the pages everyone!

Here's to a other great week Pen-Y-Fan, last one before the Easter holidays.  I can't believe how fast the weeks have gone.  Well time does fly when you're having fun after all.

To celebrate National Down Syndrome Day on Sunday 21st March, we are asking that the children come to school today wearing odd socks.

Snack Time

Due to the current situation in school because of the pandemic, we have had to rearrange our break and lunch time to ensure there is time between bubbles to clean surfaces, etc.  For this reason, our lunch is currently earlier and closer to our morning break than previously.  When lunch was at 1pm, a large snack was required to ensure the children didn't get hungry between break and lunch time.  Now that we are having an earlier lunch, we are asking that only one small healthy snack is provided for the morning break. Some pupils are taking quite some time to finish everything that is provided and this means they either leave it or have less time on the yard, which we do not want to happen as being out in the fresh air is extremely important.  Thank you for your continued support.

Here's to another great week Year 1!

This is the week we have been waiting for, we are building our bug houses this week!

Eeek, how exciting!  Please ensure a coat is provided this week as we will be out and about most afternoons.

Also, if wellies went home last week, can they be returned this week please?

Many Thanks

The children may have told you that we have had a student teacher join us in Pen-Y-Fan.  Her name is Miss Jones and she will be with us for the next ten weeks, until May half term.  Miss Jones has joined us from The University of West of England in Bristol and is in her third year of an Undergraduate Teaching Degree.  She spent last week getting to know the children and working with them in small groups, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.  Over the course of her placement, Miss Jones will take on the role as class teacher under our guidance.  We are sure that Miss Jones is going to be a valued member of the Year 1 team, and we welcome her to Penygawsi and are very much looking forward to working with her over the next term.

Eisteddfod 2021

We had a lovely afternoon last Monday for St David's Day.  The children enjoyed some still life drawing of daffodils, tasting some Welsh classics (Bara Brith and Welsh Cakes) and finding out the winners of this year's writing, art and handwriting competitions.  The children worked extremely hard to complete this tasks and the job of choosing the winners was not an easy one.  Diolch Miss Jones and Mrs Evans for judging them for us.

We had a very busy afternoon on Thursday celebrating this year's World Book Day.  The children enjoyed reading to each other, making freeze frames of our favourite stories, creating book marks and playing a listening game to create a new front cover of a book.  We also thought about who we enjoy reading with and why.

Take a look at some of the fun we had.

On Friday you were sent home with a selection of reading activities.  These are for you to keep at home and complete as best as you can.  Please practise any words you found difficult to read.

Please can book bags be returned to school as soon as possible so that new books can be given out.  From now on, reading books will be sent home every FORTNIGHT with TWO books given.  This will give you more time to read and practise the books several times at home and you won't feel rushed to read over the weekend.  The first books will be sent home this Friday (5th March) and they need to be returned to school Monday 15th March.

Here's to a fabulous full week as a class together. We can not wait!  We want to say a HUGE thank you to you all for coming back to school last week with no fuss and settling back into school so well.  We were very proud of you all.  For those who may not have returned last week, we look forward to seeing you this week.

Spring 2021 Topic

Our topic for this term is ‘Love Where You Live’.  We have decided to stay local and look at who loves our school grounds as much as us – mini beasts!  As this topic is a STEM topic (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) we are also planning to make something during this term.

During our distance learning time, we asked for ideas of how you would like this topic to develop. Lots of you suggested that we should make bug hotels. So during this term we will investigate mini beasts, what they look like and how they live. We will also look at the different micro habitats in our gardens at home and within the school grounds to find out the different types of places mini beasts like to call home.

Using what we have found out, we will complete our STEM topic by deciding where we should put our bug hotels, designing bug hotels with lots of different micro habitats and making them in our chosen area for the local mini beasts to enjoy.

We are looking forward to seeing the finished bug hotels!

Welcome to the new class page for Pen-Y-Fan.  This is where you will find all our up to date information about your child's class, instead of our blog page.  We will update this page regularly with photos, information and events.  We will post our weekly updates every Sunday to inform you of the week's events.  We are excited to start using our school website and look forward to sharing all the exciting news from Pen-Y-Fan, so you can find out more about what your child is getting up to in class.
