RICH TASK PROJECT

The pupils are working on a project for the next 2 weeks, which is based around the Science and Technology AoLe. The children's task is to make a wind turbine out of recycled materials and then create a mini animation using the Stop Motion app. Your child has planned and chosen the materials they would like to use. They have written them on a post it note so they can look at home for these items. Please can you help your child find them, but if you do not have them do not worry as they are working in groups to create. Please can these materials be brought in by Monday the latest as the lesson will start on Monday.

Thank you for all your support.

Down Syndrome Day – everybody to wear odd socks to school

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

Dydd Gwener - Friday

Please can your child bring in a labelled pair of wellies. These can be left on their peg all year, unless you need them.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 2st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school!

They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

I look forward to seeing you all in your odd socks on Tuesday!

Spring Topic - Under the Spotlight

This term's topic is called 'Under the Spotlight' with an Expressive Arts focus.  After speaking to the children and mind mapping ideas, they have chosen to have 'Space' as our over arching theme. We are going to be concentrating on animation by creating and designing our own animation in groups. We will be using the Stop Motion App on the Ipads, as well as practising our skills through J2E on JIT:Animate. We will be exploring photographic techniques in order to capture the most effective animation. This will lead to an information afternoon, where the children will write their own playscript about the knowledge they have learnt about Space over the term and present it to yourselves. There will also be an opportunity for you to watch their animations during the performance. In Literacy, we will be writing information leaflets about Space and a leaflet about Wales in readiness for our school Eisteddfod. In Numeracy, we will be learning new strategies to add and subtract numbers. We will also be learning our 2,3,5,and 10 times tables.

We are also going on a school trip to Techniquest on Friday 10th February. We will be exploring the facilities as well as watching the 'Out of this World' show. Please can I kindly ask for 3 volunteers to accompany us on this trip. This week I will post a link to the payment for this trip too. Children will need to bring a packed lunch to school for this day.

Things you can be doing to support your child at home:

  1. Read daily - not just your school book but this could be books you have at home, magazines, information online, signs in the environment.
  2.  Spell check list - please write these words in sentences as the children are finding it challenging to retain these during independent writing.
  3. Counting in 2s,5s and 10s - You can do this by practically counting things around the home; socks, sweets, cutlery etc.
  4. Learning your 2,3,5,10 times tables. Check out the website www.topmarks.co.uk. Also on the Hwb Account you can play j2blast against members within the class.

Mrs Payne

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes

Cooking Experiences

As part of our topic 'Food Glorious Food!', we have booked two exciting cooking experiences for the class which will take place over the next few weeks.  Our first experience is Richard Shawe Cooking Together, which will take place next Friday 15th of October.  Our second experience is Barefoot and Beyond Forest Fun Cooking, which will take place during week beginning the 24th of October. Information regarding ingredients and allergies will come out closer to the time, so please keep a close eye on the class website every Sunday.

This year the PTA have kindly donated £200 to each class, to help provide rich experiences for all children.  Taking this into account, we kindly ask for a contribution of £1.40 towards the cost of both of these experiences.  Please click on the link below to pay for your child.

A message from Mrs Farrell

During the summer term we spent a week of our topic celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. As part of that, all the children in the class made cards and wrote messages inside to the Queen congratulating her on her lengthy reign. Then we posted them to Buckingham Palace.

This week we were very lucky to receive a letter from Balmoral thanking us for our ‘colourful cards’ and ‘kind messages’.

I’m sure that the children will very pleased to see the response from the Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting and show their families so I have added photos of the reply on to this, your new class webpage.

Everyone at Penygawsi sends our warmest wishes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

Welcome to your new class - Craig y Llyn. It was lovely to meet most of the children before the end of term and spend some time getting to know them.  I am really looking forward to the year ahead.

Children will need a drink and a healthy snack everyday.  Please ensure they are labelled and that snacks are nut free.  All clothing should also be labelled to avoid confusion.

Children will not need to bring PE kit into school for their pegs.  Our PE day will be a Thursday and pupils are expected to come to school dressed in their PE kit.  They will need plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers. This will start next week!

Please can your child bring in a labelled pair of wellies. These can be left on their peg all year, unless you need them.

I aim to update the website on a Sunday evening with any new information about the week.  If there is any urgent information I'll let you know via text message.  Please check the main page for general school information and important dates for the term.

This week will be about settling into our new classroom, getting to know each other, looking at our class rules and creating our class charter.  I am looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Please bring a spare set of old clothes and shoes in a carrier bag. These clothes will most certainly get covered in paint powder! What a crazy first week back we have had in Year 2. Thank you for supporting us with all the children's ideas and for allowing them to come true with all your contributions and help. We have been busy producing our reusable bags. I am looking forward to spotting them out and about in our community.

This week we launched our new topic 'Feel the Beat'. The children prepared digital VIP passes, cooked their own food for the Snack Station, they created a key floor plan for other pupils to use and designed their own decorations. On Friday the children loved learning new circus tricks and performing them to their peers during the festival. They had the opportunity to watch pupils from Bryn Celynnog perform on the stage area, they created festival headbands, created their own music, ate and had lots of fun!

WELCOME BACK!

I hope you had a lovely Easter break and you enjoyed the sun and were able to spend time with your family. I can't wait to see you all and catch up!

Selling Our Fabric Bags

The children really enjoyed our ‘Save the Planet’ topic. To complete the topic we will be selling the fabric bags you ordered this week. The children worked so hard throughout the topic and have really gained an insight to the damage that rubbish is doing to our planet. They are also able to talk about ways that we can help. The bags they designed look great and we hope to see them being used around Llantrisant! We are so proud of what they have achieved.
We will be selling our bags under the shelter outside our class after school during the first week back. The children will be selling them to you in groups and on different days, please see timetable below.
You will be able to come on to the yard just after 3pm to come to our shop and to look at some of the great artwork of sea creatures the children produced earlier on in the term inspired by ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ using recycled materials from home.

Our new topic for the summer term is called ‘Feel the Beat’. It is based on the Expressive Arts part of the curriculum and we will be looking at the elements of music and dance.

Over the term we will be investigating different festivals and carnivals from around the world; why they are celebrated and how they are celebrated.

We will be starting in Wales this week and will be answering the question ‘What is a festival and what happens there?’ by looking at the ‘Green Man’ festival that takes place every August in Brecon.

On Friday we will be holding a festival on the school yard with some live music, a circus skills visitor and stalls set up with activities. Please wear something green or ‘festival’ themed clothes to school on Friday.

We will also be making some ‘green’ themed food to eat during the festival that will include the following ingredients – please inform us before Thursday if there are any allergies or if you do not wish for your child to take part in the cooking sessions.

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

Mrs Rees and Super Ambassadors

The PTA are looking to reclaim Gift Aid on school donations so that we have more money to spend on school projects and initiatives.

In order to do this, we need to collect information for HMRC. To make this as simple as possible we have created a Microsoft Form to collate this information and would be really grateful if you could please complete.

All data collected is held in the Hwb servers and will only be used for this purpose.

As you know our learning and topic is driven by the pupils questions and ideas. Through our topic 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!' the children have wanted to make a difference to our planet and have thought of many ways of how to reduce the pollution in our community. They have decided they want to make and create a 'bag for life'. Over the next 3 weeks the children will be working in groups to create the best 'bag for life'. They are currently testing out the best stitching designs in order to make the strongest bag. We are wondering how many people would buy their bags. Please can you complete the survey so we know how many resources we need to purchase.

What a great first week back we have had in Year 2. I am sure the children have been telling you all about how we started our topic, ' Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!'. On Tuesday we began with our 'great school litter pick', they wanted to launch our topic by collecting all the rubbish from our school grounds. We then sorted it into a range of categories and recycled it properly! We weighed all the different materials and could not believe how much we found!

Each week the children have asked if they could make something independently out of recycled materials. However we will need your help! This week they would like to make a bird feeder out of margarine tubs. If you have any spare ones at home, please could your child bring them in. Thank you!

Christmas Concert Video

Today we are sharing our Christmas story telling video with you. This will be in a shared folder on Hwb.

Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall. They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded. They must not be shared on any form of social media.

Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online. It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes, that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

‘Only by working together, can we achieve our aims.’

What a fantastic first term we have had in Year 2. The children have really impressed me with how much they have matured over the past 3 months and I am so pleased to see the progress they are making. I am very proud of them and they have definitely made you proud! We have been working hard this past week putting a storytelling video together for you to watch at home with your families. I will be sharing this on Hwb with you this week so please keep an eye out!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week is an annual UK event which aims to raise awareness of bullying and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.  At Penygawsi we understand the importance of raising awareness during this week and providing our pupils with the tools and strength needed if they ever find themselves being bullied.

This year the theme is ‘One Kind Word’, emphasising the positive impact a small gesture or comment can have on someone else’s day.  Odd Socks Day is held on 15th November to kick off Anti-Bullying Week. This day helps us to recognise that everyone is unique and different, and that we all need kindness and respect.

Harvest

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  The pupils will be participating in a special harvest assembly.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by Monday 1st November 2021.

Thank you for your continued support

Dinosaurs Visiting Penygawsi!

We have launched our new topic this term, Through the Keyhole, and the children are really enjoying learning all about dinosaurs. To enhance the children’s learning we have organised for them to take part in a Dinohire  Workshop where they will get to meet real life sized dinosaur figures and learn all about dinosaur fossils from Ranger Chris. This will really help with their oracy and writing skills this term as they will be designing, describing and creating their own dinosaur in co-operative groups. This workshop will take place in school on Thursday 11th November. We kindly ask for a contribution of £7.50 for the workshop, to cover the cost. Please follow the link below to pay online. Please search in the Filtered Category for Penygawsi Primary School and then look for Year 2 Dinosaur Workshop.

I have also booked a virtual tour of Cardiff Museum where we will be taking part in a live music dinosaur lesson. This will be a free session after half term.

We have been nominated to take part in the Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme. We can collect tokens which can be exchanged for gardening equipment for our school.

For every £10 you spend (in store or online), you will get a 'grow' token which can be donated to a school of your choice.  You need to download the MyMorrisons app to start collecting and to nominate the school you would like to donate your 'grow' tokens to.

This is a great opportunity to get some new gardening equipment for our school allotment, so please tell any family or friends who shop in Morrisons all about it! Diolch.

Bore da, I hope you are all having a lovely weekend. I am very sorry there has been issues with you accessing the children's homework. I attached it on a Publisher document which I didn't realise that it isn't accessible for everyone. Moving forward this will not happen and I will ensure the work is on a word document. If you would like a paper copy for this week's work, please just ask me on Monday. I have also attached another copy of the newsletter, just in case we have the same issue you opening the document. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Starting from Monday your child will come home with a paper book this week and that will be the day it needs to be returned. This will be a 2 week cycle. The second week I would like you to access Oxford Reading Buddy. I will be sending home logins this week.

A lot of you have already started the Big Spell programme in school. We have carried out an assessment to check where each child is at. Today your child will come home with a new spelling list. Some children will be staying on the same list which is not a problem at all however we have sent you a new copy. Even if your child was halfway through the spelling list sheet, we are now putting every child on List 1 so we can all start at the same point. Your child will have an opportunity to practise their list every morning in school for 10 minutes and the spelling test will be on a Monday (starting the 27th Sept) .  If your child has 9 or 10 out of 10 they will be able to move to the next list. If not they will stay on the same list until they achieve that score. It will be your child's responsibility to inform you on their marks. They will be marking their list with an adult so will be told the same day.

 (3:20 – 3:25 A- L surnames and 3:25 to 3:30 M-Z surnames)

Children will need a drink and a healthy snack everyday.  Please ensure they are labelled and that snacks are nut free.  All clothing should also be labelled to avoid confusion.

Children will not need to bring PE kit into school for their pegs.  Our PE day will be a Wednesday and pupils are expected to come to school dressed in their PE kit.  They will need plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers.  Please can your child bring in a labelled pair of wellies. These can be left on their peg all year, unless you need them.

I aim to update the blog on a Sunday evening with any new information about the week.  If there is any urgent information I'll let you know via text message.  Please check the main page for general school information and important dates for the term.

This week will be about settling into our new classroom, getting to know each other, looking at our class rules and creating our class charter.
This week looks like it could be very hot. Please ensure that your child has a sun hat and that sun cream is applied before coming into school.

Have a lovely Sunday and I will see you all tomorrow!

Mrs Payne

Academic Year 2021-2022

On behalf of Mrs Evans and I, thank you for all of the lovely cards and gifts. We've had a fantastic year teaching your children. They have worked so, so hard, in the strangest and most challenging of times and we are so proud of them.

Mrs Vowles has also asked me to say thank you on her behalf for the well wishes and gift she received. She was very grateful.

Have a wonderful summer everyone!

School Traffic Survey

Our school is working in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCTCBC) and WEPCO (the design and delivery partner) on a school travel plan. A school travel plan is a range of measures that aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport use;
  • Improve road safety;
  • Reduce traffic and pollution;
  • Improve levels of health and fitness; and
  • Raise awareness of road safety, health and environmental issues.

An important part of developing the travel plan is understanding how and why everyone travels to school in the way they do.

The survey is now open and you're invited to have your say! Please note that a separate link is provided for pupils, staff and parents and each survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. By gaining a better understanding of your current travel patterns and choices, we can work towards a more sustainable future and ensure that each individual voice is heard during the design process.  Please click on the link below and support your child in completing the survey.

Wythnos 5 - WC. 22nd March 2021

Well, we have made it to the end of term and what a strange one it has been! We have loved being back in the classroom over the last few weeks and the children have been fantastic.  They should be very proud of everything they have achieved this term, particularly with the challenges faced going back to distance learning at the start of spring term.  Da iawn, pawb!

Dydd Llun/Monday

Spell check.

Please return reading bags with books and diaries.

Please bring an empty milk bottle to school for our class project.

Dydd Gwener/Friday

Reading bags will be returned.

Please wear PE kit to school.

Snack

Please can you send only one small healthy snack to school with your child for break time.  Because of the pandemic, we have had to rearrange our break and lunch times which means that our lunch is currently earlier and closer to morning break.  When lunch was later, a larger snack was needed, but now a small snack will be sufficient.  Some children take a long time to eat all of their snack, which means they are leaving it or having less time on the yard at playtime, which we want them to fully enjoy.  Thank you.

Easter Sponsored Read.

As part of our school vision to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading for enjoyment, we have decided to do a Sponsored Read during the Easter break.  The money raised will help to fund the expansion of our school library,.

At the end of the week, we will be sharing the Sponsor form and explanation of how to engage your child in the Readathon!!

The documents will be shared via the J2e for your child's class on the HWB platform that we used during the Online Learning.  Paper copies are available if you need them, please let me know.

You can choose how you would like to sponsor your child, either an amount per minute/hour/chapter/book or you could have fun trying to get a line or a house using the Bingo Reading Card that is also in the folder.

The child who raises the most sponsorship money will receive a prize of a new book! Have fun!

Wythnos 4 - WC. 15th March 2021

Prynhawn da all,

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend and had an enjoyable Mother's Day.  The children were so proud of the cards they made for you last week, and they could hardly wait to give them to you.  I hope you liked them!

Here is the update for this week:

Dydd Llun/Monday

Spell check.

No need to return reading books this week.

Today your child will come home with Easter raffle tickets.  Please can these be returned by Thursday 18th March?  The PTA apologise for the quick turnaround, but they have been waiting for tickets to arrive.

Dydd Mawrth/Tuesday

Please can children wear PE kit to school today?

Dydd Gwener/Friday

On Sunday 21st of March it is World Down Syndrome Day.  As a school, we always raise awareness of this day, and this year is no different.  On Friday 19th of March we are asking that all pupils come to school wearing 'lots of socks', crazy socks or maybe mismatched socks.  Let's get people talking about Down Syndrome!

Outdoor clothing

If your child does not have a pair of wellies, please can you send them into school this week?  Please put your child's name in each welly.  We will be completing lots of outdoor activities over the next few weeks.

1st March 2021

Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! Happy Saint David's Day!

We have a busy week ahead of us, with Saint David's Day celebrations and World Book Day this week.

We were so pleased to see everyone last week and hear all about your days at home.  We had a lovely few days, getting ourselves back into the school day.  Mrs Evans and I were proud of how the children came in and got straight back into their routines.  They were so pleased to see their friends and there were big smiles all around :)

Here is the information for this week:

Dydd Llun/Monday

Today is Saint David's Day.  We will have a celebration in class during the afternoon.  Please wear your Welsh clothing (costumes, tops, or something red or green) to school today.

During the afternoon we will have a food tasting session, tasting Welsh cakes, bara brith, cheese.  Please let me know on the gate in the morning if you do not want your child taking part or have any concerns.

Dydd Iau/Thursday

World Book Day - we will complete a carousel of activities in the afternoon to celebrate.  We are not dressing up this year, so please come in school uniform as normal.

Dydd Gwener/Friday

PE - please wear kit to school.

Spellings

Your child was sent home with a spelling list in their reading bags on Friday.  This may be the spelling list he/she moved on to during distance learning or a new list.  We reassessed spellings last week so this is the most up to date list they will need to work on.  If it is the same list as you have been practising at home already, please can you remove the note attached and send it back in on Monday with your child's name and spelling list and number on it.  This way I will know which list they are working on to practise in school.  If your child received a different list, please start on number 1.  We will restart peer spell tests on Monday 8th March.

Reading

We understand that weekends can be very busy and there's not always time to read your book, so we have changed the way we send home and return books.  On Friday, your child brought home 2 reading books.  Please keep these books to practise for the week, and return them the following Monday 8th March.  They will then bring another 2 books home on the Friday.

Spring term 2021

Out topic this term is 'Love Where You Live'.  This topic will be a STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and we will focus on creating an end product, turning ourselves into researchers, designers and engineers to make our very own bird houses!  We will carry out investigations in science and use the skills we have been working on in maths to create our finished product.  We will also continue to write in the form of leaflets and instructional writing to instruct others on how to build a bird house like ours.

We look forward to getting started!
