Jigsaw

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be exploring how to be healthy in our Jigsaw sessions. Part of the scheme covers the importance of staying away from well known ‘drugs’ including medical drugs.

During some of the lessons the children will be given an explanation of the general meaning behind the word ‘drugs’ and how this term refers to any form of medication. They will also learn that they should not touch any substance if they come across it because it could be dangerous.

Our Jigsaw scheme covers this issue in a manner that is appropriate to the age of the children. However, we are making you aware that we are covering this topic because the children may have questions for you.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

#WorldDownSyndromeDay

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day! of

They will also learn that using the word ‘gay’ in a derogatory way is called ‘being homophobic’ and unacceptable in modern society.

WC. 25th September

Last week the children had the opportunity to vote for the class representatives for the various comittees. Children who showed an interest stood at the front of the class and gave a speech about why they want to be a representative of that particular committee. All of the children gave amazing speeches and I am so proud of them. It takes a lot of courage for them to speak in front of their peers and they should all be extremely proud of themselves.

In class we conintued our journey into poetry writing looking at alliteration and adjectives. We also continued to extend our knowledge of place value by partitioning two and three-digit numbers. The children impressed me with their knowledge, understanding  and hard work. Da iawn pawb!

Spellings

All of the children have been re-assessed in their spellings and they all came home with a new list on Friday. If your child has not moved list then they will continue on the same list that they were working on before the summer holiday.

Learn its

All of the children have practiced completing their learn its at the new reduced times on Friday with many of them having their time reduced significantly so that it is in line with the times required in the Learn its handbook. They will have the opportunity to practice their learn its everyday this week in preparation for Friday.

WC. 18th September

It has been another busy week in Dosbarth Waun Fach. We have began out journey into the world of George Seurat art where we have discovered the technique known as pointillism. We learnt that George Seurat used dots of different colours to create his artwork and we had a go at colour blending with primary and secondary colours.

I listened to all of the children read last week and they have all come home with their book bags. I have written your child's reading day in their reading diary. Please ensure that they bring their book bag to school on that day so that we can change their book.

I will send new spelling lists home with the children this week and then spell checks will begin on Monday 25th September.

WC. 11th September

We had a very busy week last week getting to know each other and all of the children have settled into their new class extremely well. We began the week by creating our class charter which we linked to the children's rights. We discussed the different children's rights as a class and then we decided on the most important rights for our time in school. These rights will be displayed on our Class Charter board.

On Friday we had lots of fun during our new topic hook! We created mosaics and portraits ready for our deep dive into our art based topic which is called 'it's a material world. This is a very exciting topic which will involve us taking a deep dive into the art work of both Pablo Picasso and David Seurat. We will become artists by learning to use different materials and artistic techniques to create artwork.

Welcome back

I hope that you have all had a fun-filled but relaxing summer holiday and I can't wait to hear all about it tomorrow. It was lovely to have the opportunity to spend some time with you all before the end of last term and I am looking forward to getting to know you all over the next year.

Mrs Bullock

Please can you ensure that your child brings a drink and a nut-free, healthy snack to school each day. Please can you also ensure that your child's clothing is clearly labeled with their name so that it is easy to identify.

I will update the class page each week with any new information. If there is any urgent information then I will contact you via text.

Our PE day is on Tuesday and the children need to come to school wearing their PE kit. This consists of plain navy shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings, a white t-shirt and a navy jacket/hoody. PE lessons will start on 12th of September.

This week will be about settling into our new class and getting to know each other better. We will be looking at our class rules and creating our class charter. We will also be finding out what our new and exciting topic is for this year.

If you have any questions or concerns then please speak to me on the gate or contact the school office.

I am looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Week Beginning 17th July

I cannot believe I am saying that we are in the final week of Year 3. This academic year has quite literally flown by! I am so proud of how the children have settled in and adapted to life in Key Stage 2. They have worked extremely hard and this shows within their progression over the year. I am looking forward to seeing them develop even more during another year together in Year 4.

Thank you for all your continued support this year, and a massive thank you for the presents we received last week. We are truly grateful for your kind generosity. Let's have a fun final week together before a well deserved summer break!!

World Down Syndrome Day - Wear odd/crazy socks to school

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 21st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school! They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!
The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

Under the Spotlight

This term our topic is called 'Under the spotlight', an Expressive Arts theme with a focus on animation and drama skills. We will be looking at creating animations, using video and photography skills as well as editing techniques to add features such as voice overs and music/sounds for effects. The children have chosen a sports theme to base our animation and drama learning on, therefore, we will be researching sports around the world and working collaboratively to design a new sport in groups. We will use our drama skills to act out and perform our creations for an audience. We will be experiencing a workshop to learn lots of filming and editing skills then put these skills into a production. We will also use literacy skills to write a story that builds a scene behind our animation. Finally, we will look at adding amounts of money and giving change, before we hold a movie afternoon where we will use money to buy tickets/confectionaries, and see how animation is brought together with drama in a production of an animated movie.

Additionally, in Maths, we will also be focussing heavily on our times tables. The children will be practising their recall of the 2x, 5x, 10x and 3x tables, at speed, initially. When they have mastered these we will move on to the 4x and 8x's, using fact families to help understand and use the times tables.

We had a fantastic time cooking Together with Richard last week! The children learnt how to use a knife correctly to make healthy wraps. They were delicious 😋

On Thursday 20th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by the morning of Thursday 20th October.

Thank you for your continued support

Cooking Experiences

As part of our topic 'Food Glorious Food!', we have booked two exciting cooking experiences for the class which will take place over the next few weeks.  Our first experience is Richard Shawe Cooking Together, which will take place next Wednesday 13th of October.  Our second experience is Barefoot and Beyond Forest Fun Cooking, which will take place during week beginning the 24th of October. Information regarding ingredients and allergies will come out closer to the time, so please keep a close eye on the class website every Sunday.

This year the PTA have kindly donated £200 to each class, to help provide rich experiences for all children.  Taking this into account, we kindly ask for a contribution of £1.40 towards the cost of both of these experiences.  Please click on the link below to pay for your child.

Communication

Parents/Carers,

As you are aware, staff are in class for the majority of the school day with your children and do not have the chance to access to emails. With many staff in our school, there is a possibility that communication via others can be missed, and messages not relayed. Therefore, our school policy for communication between parents and teachers is via admin email as these will also be picked up and passed on to the relevant members of staff, to be answered in due course. Should you feel the need to email me, please note the email address is:

admin@penygawsiprimary.rctcbc.cymru.

Alternatively, I am available on the KS2 gate Monday and Wednesday mornings, and on the KS2 yard Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons if you would prefer to speak to me directly.

I hope this helps any future correspondence.

Thank you for your support,

Miss Morris

Week Beginning 12th September

We had a great week settling into Key Stage 2 school life last week, building relationships and getting to know each other. All the children have settled in very well and it was a delight to see them so happy and enthusiastic to come into school.

The children will be coming home with their bookbags this week. Inside their bags will be their reading diary which will state which day will be their reading day - this will be the day they need to return their reading bag each week please.

When collecting children from the Key Stage 2 yard, please can you ensure you follow the arrows for our 1 way system collection procedures. This allows the movement to flow and also supports safeguarding, ensuring staff can see that children are being collected by the correct family members (particularly with our youngest Key Stage 2 pupils). If you do need to wait to speak to a teacher, or for your child, please could you wait by the shelter so that other parents can continue moving to avoid congestion. Diolch yn fawr.

Over the last two weeks, we have learnt lots about the festival of colour and the story behind the festival.

As you can see, we had so much fun in the colour run, experiencing what it would be like to take part in the festival.

We researched tie dye methods and chose which one we wanted to try and recreate.

Finally, we made some coloured pancakes to taste a snack that is eaten within the celebrations. We used lots of maths skills to weigh and measure out the ingredients before cooking.

This week we will be staying local, within the UK and learning about The Queen Jubilee. On Wednesday 25th May, all children are invited to join in the celebrations of The Queen Jubilee in an afternoon tea party. Please could pupils wear red, white and blue colours and bring a plate of food (for themselves only) along with a drink, to enjoy our whole school celebration.

Reading/Spelling

The children should have all come home with their spelling lists and reading books last week. I am so pleased with their progress and proud of the outcomes of our assessments last week! The groupings for reading have been altered slightly. This will help the children by having some peers in their group from last time for comfort and confidence but also challenge them to read amongst new peers too. The reading days for each group are:

Monday - George's marvellous medicine

Tuesday - Harry Potter

Wednesday - Matilda

Thursday - Charlotte's Web

Friday - Charlie and the chocolate factory

The Green Man Festival

We had a blast at our festival on Friday, and the children's behaviour was commented on by the numerous visitors we had, which was a delight to hear! Da iawn, pawb!

This week, we will be looking at 'Holi - The Festival of Colour'.

I hope you've had a lovely long weekend.

See you tomorrow,

As part of our topic this term, we have managed to secure a booking with a circus practitioner who will be coming into school to undertake a circus skills workshop with the children. This term our topic is Expressive Arts focus, with music and dance being the main lead. Our theme is Feel the Beat and we will be venturing off around the world again! This time we will be learning all about the different carnivals and festivals that take place, looking at dances, music and celebrations. We will begin with a local festival that takes place annually in Brecon, The GreenMan Festival.

There will not be a Spell Check test this week, as we will be carrying out big spell assessments for the start of the next term. I will also be assessing the children's reading throughout the week. Therefore, reading days will not be needed for this week only.

All children will come home with a reading book and their spelling list (new ones if needed) by the end of the week.

I am excited to Feel the Beat, and get creative with you this term!

Last day of term.

Last week we had a very busy week indeed!!

Rights Morning:

As part of our Rights Morning last week, we held a class debate. Article 12 states that we all have a right to be listened to and taken seriously. Therefore, we listened to each other carefully, took on board their opinions and views then expressed our own arguments (both fore and against each other.)

It was very interesting to hear their views, and see how some children were swayed by their peers viewpoints, to change their own. However, it was equally lovely to see the children who appreciated the opposite views to theirs, but still stood their ground and rooted for their own beliefs as to whether sports should be competitive and celebrate winners, or be non-competitive and celebrate everyone's achievements for taking part.

Wellbeing Wednesday

Meet the teams:

Last week's wellbeing focus was about team work and working together as a team. Firstly, each team worked together to decide on a team name.

They then were set a challenge - The Human Knot Challenge. This focussed on all members of the team having an equal part to play to complete the task, but also needed clear communication with each other to untie themselves without letting go of each others hands. There was a lot of tangles, twists and turns but even more laughter and enjoyment!! It was a joy to watch the children working together.

The last challenge was to complete a non-verbal task. Each child had an unknown colour placed on their forehead and had to find all other peers with the same colour as them, without any verbal communication. I was super impressed with how well everybody worked, supporting each other and working extremely hard together.

RIBA project with architects:

We have been extremely lucky to take part in a schools programme with RIBA and their architects. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the task of designing and constructing a building to form a model village. The creations are fantastic so far!

I hope you have had a lovely weekend, and I look forward to another fun-filled week, before a well-deserved 2 weeks off for lots of chocolate and family fun!

I wish you all a Happy Easter and hope you have an enjoyable school holiday.

Diolch,

Recycle unwanted clothes and raise funds for our school!

A quick reminder that we are still collecting clothing at school and donating to Dragon Bags, a company which is a free fundraising scheme that helps schools across Wales raise funds through textile recycling.  The money we raise from this scheme goes towards buying resources for use in the classroom and outdoors to enhance the learning experiences we offer our pupils.

How Does it Work?

Dragon Bag's aim is to help every single school throughout Wales achieve their fundraising goals as well as diverting textiles from landfill at the same time. Parents/Carers donate their unwanted clothing to school and it  is placed in one of our recycling bins.  We have one in the school hall and one in the staff car park.  Once the bins are full, we contact Dragon Bags and they come to collect our donations.  Once your clothes are loaded onto their van they start a journey that could take them to any corner of the world.  Different items will be more likely to end up in different climates; that old ski suit isn’t likely to be making its way to Africa any-time soon!  One thing all the clothes do have in common is that they are going to a place where they will provide affordable clothing to people who need it.

When the clothes are collected, the items are weighed and the school are issued with a receipt pf collection.  Once the final weight is agreed, the school receive the relevant funds within 5 days.  At present we get 35p/kg.

If you are thinking of having a clear out, please bring your unwanted clothes to school and we will take care of the rest.  Take a look below at the items Dragon Bags will accept.

There are some items they can not accept. Take a look below:

Any donations will be gratefully received.

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

Gift Aid

The PTA are looking to reclaim Gift Aid on school donations so that we have more money to spend on school projects and initiatives.

In order to do this, we need to collect information for HMRC. To make this as simple as possible we have created a Microsoft Form to collate this information and would be really grateful if you could please complete.

All data collected is held in the Hwb servers and will only be used for this purpose.

If someone asks you about your socks you can tell them, "I'm wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome"

Get yourself informed so you can tell them about Down syndrome.

Rights Morning - 9th March

As part of our weekly rights session in KS2, we have decided that this week's articles will link to war and conflict.  With the ever increasing news coverage of the heart-breaking situation in Ukraine, and the increased number of questions coming from our pupils, we feel it is important to discuss what is happening.  Years 3 to 6 will take part in discussion activities and circle time sessions where their feelings and fears will be addressed. Obviously each session will be age appropriate dependent on the year group and the amount of information discussed will differ from years 3 to 6.

As a school, we feel it is important to address this matter but also offer support to the people of Ukraine.  We are therefore asking for a £1 donation to the charity UNICEF who we are working closely with as we continue on our rights journey.  UNICEF currently have an emergency Ukraine crisis appeal and are one of the many humanitarian charities calling for an immediate ceasefire.

How UNICEF is helping children in Ukraine?

They have been working tirelessly to keep children safe since this conflict began eight years ago and they are determined to remain in Ukraine to reach the most vulnerable children and families.

  • They are helping to provide families with access to clean water and healthy food.
  • They are delivering lifesaving supplies to support families who have been forced to flee and are working closely with local health facilities to ensure they have the vital supplies needed.
  • They are helping to make sure that child protection services continue.
  • They are working with our partners and the UNHCR to assess the refugee situation across neighbouring countries.
  • In neighbouring countries they are delivering Blue Dot safe spaces with our partners, which will provide care and support, information to families seeking refuge, psychosocial support, water and sanitation supplies, safe spaces for mothers and children, protection for unaccompanied and separated children and more.

We thank you for your continued support and appreciate any donations that are given.

Kind Regards

Swimming

This term years 3 and 4 will be attending weekly swimming sessions (starting Friday 14th January), for which they will need a swimming costume.

I hope you enjoy your last day, and get an early night ready for a fun-filled 1st day back at school.

Christmas Show

Please consider the Christmas video in the same way as you would if taking a video in the school hall.

They are for personal use only, for you to enjoy as a parent/guardian/carer.  They should be watched in J2E and not downloaded.

They must not be shared on any form of social media.

Many children and their parents do not consent to them being shared and we need to be mindful that we keep everyone safe online.

It is only by being supportive of everyone’s wishes that we can continue to share in this way.

Thank you support in this matter.

‘Only by working together, can we achieve our aims.’

Week Beginning 12th December

I cannot believe we are into our final week of term! The children have settled really well into Year 3, and we have had a fantastic term of fun learning together. They sure deserve a fun-filled festive break after all their achievements over the past few months. It has been a pleasure to work with each and every one of them :)

Anti-Bullying Week is an annual UK event which aims to raise awareness of bullying and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.  At Penygawsi we understand the importance of raising awareness during this week and providing our pupils with the tools and strength needed if they ever find themselves being bullied.

This year the theme is ‘One Kind Word’, emphasising the positive impact a small gesture or comment can have on someone else’s day.  Odd Socks Day is held on 15th November to kick off Anti-Bullying Week. This day helps us to recognise that everyone is unique and different, and that we all need kindness and respect.

Christmas Jumpers

We will be taking our annual Christmas photo on Wednesday 17th November. Please can your child bring in a Christmas jumper/top/dress to wear for the photo on this day? Please can you send them in a bag, clearly labelled with their name? The children are to wear their uniform to school and will put their Christmas items on for the photo, then take them straight off again to bring back home that day.

Here's to a fun packed week where we are jetting home to the UK to raise awareness of Remembrance Day, Antibullying Week and Children in Need.

Children in Need

As you may be aware, Children in Need is on Friday 19th November.  School Council and Super Ambassadors met last week to discuss how we can celebrate one of our most favourite days in the school calendar safely.  We have decided that the children will celebrate in their class bubbles but everyone will come to school dressed in the same theme.

This year, School Council have decided upon HEROES as our theme.  This means children can come dressed as their most treasured hero for the day.  If you do not have a costume at home or your child does not have a specific hero then they are welcome to come dressed in their pjs instead.  We will be asking for a £1 donation for this special charity.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend, enjoying the fireworks displayed that we discussed last week. Early night tonight ready for another fun-filled, busy week of Diwali celebrations.

CLASS TRIP

As part of our science topic this term, we have planned and booked a trip to Techniquest for later this term.  We are very excited to be able to offer a trip to the pupils after such a challenging time last year.  We know the children are very much looking forward to it as much as we are.

The trip is booked for Thursday 9th December.  During the visit we will have time to explore the many science exhibitions that Techniquest has on offer, as well as taking part in one of their fabulous workshops. As we are visiting during December, we have chosen one of their Christmas themed science shows, Elf and Safety.

We will join the Elf and Safety team as they show us the very latest in elf technology to help prepare Santa for what will be his busiest Christmas yet.  As if jetting around the entire world in just one night wasn’t enough to expect, it turns out that the number of children who need a visit this year is higher than ever. If we don’t take some drastic action, we could have the world’s worst delivery crisis on our hands!  Now, it’s down to the elves to come up with new clever ideas to help meet this challenge. But wait… some of those inventions look a bit odd to us, are they sure they’re safe? We’re going to join the team and help the elves to test out their plans to save Christmas this year.

During the visit, the children will have the opportunity to develop not only their science skills, but their numeracy and literacy skills too.

We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £7.50 towards the cost of the trip.  The children will need to wear their school uniform and bring a packed lunch with them on the day.

As you may be aware, all school trip payments now take place online as this is the preferred method suggested by RCT local authority.  To pay your contribution to the trip, visit the following link.

http://www.rctcbc.gov.uk/schoolpayments

We are asking that payments be paid by Wednesday 10th November, with the payment closing on Friday 12th November.  A letter will come home with your child on Monday and if you agree to them attending the trip, please complete the form at the bottom of the letter and returned to school by Friday 12th November.

  • We became musicians and played to Kwanzaa music.

  • We have explored missions independently.

HARVEST FESTIVAL 2021

On  November 3rd, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  It is going to be a little different this year and we will be delivering our Harvest items in our class bubbles virtually.  The pupils will enjoy the assembly from the comfort of their classrooms with each class celebrating in their own unique way.

We are asking that if possible the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe their families are in most need of:

  1. Milk (UHT)
  2. Cereal and Porridge Oats
  3. Tinned and Packet Soup
  4. Fruit Juice (UHT Carton)
  5. Pasta Sauces
  6. Rice
  7. Sponge pudding (tinned)
  8. Custard
  9. Tinned tomatoes
  10. Lentils
  11. Savoury Rice
  12. Noodles
  13. Pasta 'n' Sauce
  14. Couscous
  15. Tinned Vegetables
  16. Instant mash
  17. Tinned potatoes
  18. Tinned Meat
  19. Tinned Fish
  20. Tinned Fruit
  21. Jam
  22. Sugar
  23. Biscuits / snack bars
  24. Vegetable Oil
  25. Tea Bags
  26. Coffee
  27. Hot Chocolate

We would be very grateful if you could bring any donations you would like to make to school by Monday 1st November 2021.

After a difficult vote, we eventually came to the final decision. Our chosen leaders are:

School Council - Erin & Max

Criw Cymraeg - George & Caitlin

Curriculum Committee - Thomas & Isabelle

We have had lots of fun learning about the countries and their celebrations so far, and the children have amazed me with their enthusiasm. We have been nominated to take part in the Morrisons 'Good to Grow' scheme. We can collect tokens which can be exchanged for gardening equipment for our school.

For every £10 you spend (in store or online), you will get a 'grow' token which can be donated to a school of your choice.  You need to download the MyMorrisons app to start collecting and to nominate the school you would like to donate your 'grow' tokens to.

This is a great opportunity to get some new gardening equipment for our school allotment, so please tell any family or friends who shop in Morrisons all about it! Diolch.

Class Elections

The children were told last week that there were class elections taking place on Monday. We discussed the different roles available, and the voting process that will be happening. Over the weekend, the children were asked to have a think about the different committees, and whether they would like to be a representative. The children who would like to represent any of the committees will be given the opportunity to share with their peers why they would be the best person and should be voted for. Children can apply for more than 1 council, but can only be chosen for 1 role overall.

There will be 2 children voted by their peers for each committee.

The roles on offer for them to join are:

  • School Council - This involves making decisions on behalf of the school.
  • Curriculum Cymraeg - This involves promoting Welsh in school.
  • Curriculum Committee - This involves leading the new curriculum.

Please could you discuss with your child whether they would be interested in any of the above and prepare them to have some reasons why they would make a good representative to share with their peers on Monday. Best of luck to anyone that is applying!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I will see you tomorrow to continue on our USA journey.

Reading

Your child has completed a reading assessment that has assessed their reading skills and understanding. These results have given a level for where your child's reading is currently at, which has been matched on their Oxford Reading Buddy accounts. Please do not worry if your child is revisiting a level, this does not mean they have gone backwards. It means they need to complete other reading skills for this level, such as vocabulary and comprehension. As well as reading to you, it is also important for your child to listen to you read to them. This allows you to model reading with expression, pausing for punctuation and opportunities for them to hear pronunciation of new vocabulary.

Unfortunately, we are unable to send home reading books at the moment. Therefore, reading at home will be online. All children were given a new copy of their Oxford Reading Buddy log in details last week. Please let me know if you have not received these, or having any trouble logging on.

Through the Keyhole

This week the children came into class to a surprise delivery! Ash Dykes, a famous Welsh explorer, left us a keyhole with a letter inside asking us to complete a class challenge. We will be completing his challenge this term, within our topic.

This week we will be focusing on writing a letter, to reply to Ash and accept his challenge. This was one of the children's suggestions from our discussion of ideas.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, for an exciting fun-filled week!

Miss Morris

Week 2 - W.B 13/09/21

It was a great pleasure to welcome all the children into Year 3 last week. We had a great week getting to know each other, create class rules and carry out a Science investigation too! The children were a delight and seemed to have lots of fun on their first week in KS2.

This week we will be carrying out spelling tests, reading, language, Maths and begin our new topic Through the Keyhole.

Reading will be online, on Oxford Reading Buddy. We will also be reading a variety of books in class, daily.

Dydd Llun

Your child will come home with their new spelling word list.  We carried out an assessment last week to see what list was needed for each child.  As it is a new term, we will be starting from List 1 of each set again.  So even if your child brings home the same set as before the summer, they need to start with List 1.  Revising words they have done previously will not harm them and in fact, will help them spell them without support in their independent writing.

Please support your child in learning these spellings throughout the week.  We suggest they spend at least 5 minutes a day practising each word, spelling them verbally, writing them down and also putting them into sentences so that they have a thorough understanding of the word.

Our spelling tests will take place every Friday, with the children practising them daily during registration Monday to Thursday.

Welcome to Waun Fach

Academic Year 2021-2022

THANK YOU!!

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching at Penygawsi this term and I’m sad to be leaving. Your children have been wonderful and will shine in year 4 I’m sure. Thanks for all my lovely gifts and cards, I really appreciate it!
Have a wonderful summer.

Final Portraits

WB 12.7.21

Happy Sunday!

I can’t believe we’re heading into the last week of school before the summer holidays. It’s been an odd school year and it’s finally coming to an end. I wanted to pop on here to thank each and every child and parent in Waun Fach for the past couple of weeks. Even though I’ve not spent too long with the class, I have throughly enjoyed getting to know the children and learning all about their funny ways. I’ve created great relationships with all 26 children and I will truly miss them. Your children are such a credit to you and they have definitely made both myself and Miss Mallia proud during the summer term. Unfortunately I won’t be returning to Penygawsi in September as I have a new job elsewhere, but I wish them all the best as they move into year 4 - I know they’ll thrive and shine!

Few messages for this week:

Monday:

  • PE as normal

Wednesday:

  • The children have chosen a ‘picnic party’ to end the school year. Due to COVID restrictions, we felt the safest way to do this was. The children can bring a party-style packed lunch and we’ll eat it outside on party plates with some fun and games. Even though it will be ‘party-style’ with plenty of treats, please make sure it’s also substantial (sandwiches, pizza, sausage rolls etc) as it is the children’s lunch. Children can also wear normal clothes on this day!
  • A letter should have been sent out regarding this on Friday.

I’m going to take lots of pictures of our last week, that I’ll post on our class page.

I’ll also be posting pictures of the children’s final portraits this week.

See you tomorrow,

Miss Jones

WB 5th July 2021

I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend!

Tomorrow the children will find out their class teacher for next year and a text will be sent to parents at the end of the school day. On Friday the children will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher!

It’s come to my attention that the homework I set on J2homework won’t open for some reason (my apologies). Instead the children can practice all their times tables in preparation for year 4 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). I want them to become as familiar as possible with them.

See you tomorrow!

We’re nearly there, only 3 weeks left of term!

Another fun week in Waun Fach filled with capacity and volume in maths, persuasive poster creation in literacy and plenty of topic.

Thursday afternoon we’ll be having a KS2 quiz with a little treat for the children. I’m looking forward to it!

WB 21.6.21

Good evening,

I hope you've all had a lovely and well-rested weekend.

This week we'll be continuing with our topic 'Together Stronger', alongside literacy and maths. Can all children please remember to bring in a photograph of the person they have chosen to create a portrait of for their final piece by Tuesday morning so we can make a start. If you are having trouble printing, please let me know and I can arrange for it to be printed in school.

School uniform to be worn as normal this week, except for PE on Monday.

The weather is looking unsettled this week so please bring in a rain coat in case.

On Friday we invite the children to wear something red for Velindre and The Welsh Blood Service (see poster below). Mr Thomas will be taking donations in breakfast club and on the school gate in the morning.

See you tomorrow!

Miss Jones

Noswaith dda,

I have uploaded homework onto J2Homework. Homework remains the same as before half term, it will be set on a Wednesday. However I understand that the children are busy with extra-curricular activities and the weather is nice, therefore I have decided to change the homework deadline from a Monday to the following Wednesday. This way the children have a full week to complete it.

Diolch, Miss Jones.

Good Evening,

I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather. I can’t believe we are in the final term of what has been another odd year in school. As Mrs James has left, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your child’s class teacher for the summer term. I’m looking forward to getting to know them all and I’m sure we’ll have an enjoyable last few weeks in year 3.

The children will continue to have PE with ‘Fit for Fun’ every Monday, so please wear PE kit to school on this day. As the weather is getting warmer, please try and ensure your child brings a water bottle and a hat to school each day, along with sun cream application in the mornings before school.

This term we’ll be continuing with our Expressive Arts topic ‘Together Stronger’ as we work towards our final portraiture piece. The children have chosen to draw/ paint a key worker or somebody who has helped them through the pandemic. Can all children please bring in a photograph of this person this week so we can make a start.

Remember Sports Day is Wednesday morning! I’ll be taking plenty of pictures so you don’t miss out.

Homework will continue to be set on a Wednesday and due on the following Monday. There is currently homework set on J2E, however I have extended the deadline to Wednesday this week, due to the delay in everything getting set up.

If you have any questions / concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or talk to me at the start / end of the school day (my gate duty is Tuesday).

Diolch,

Miss Jones

Thank You

A huge thank you for all the wonderful cards and gifts that I have received. I really appreciate all your kind words and well wishes. Your children have been a pleasure to teach and I will miss them dearly.

Good bye from me after 18 years teaching in Penygawsi. Have a lovely half term break.

Mrs James.

Week 7 Wb 24/5/21

This week we have another short week with an inset day on Friday again.

PE is on Monday and PC Davies is coming in on Monday morning to talk to us about internet safety.

This is the last time that I will write on the website because this is my last week in school. It has been a pleasure to have taught your children this year and the resilience they have shown during this very difficult year has been a credit to you all. Thank you for all of your support, I really appreciate it.

The children will meet their new Teacher this week. Miss Jones will be in class all week working with us and will have a thorough handover this week. This will be a great opportunity for her to get to know everyone whilst I am still in school.

I wish you all the very best, have a lovely half term holiday. It is a well deserved break for everyone.

Kind regards,

Mrs James.

Thank you for all the lovely phone conversations with parents' evening last week. It was so lovely to chat to you all about your child's progress. If you did not answer your phone last week and missed your child's parent evening chat I will catch up with you this week.

Thanks,

Mrs James.

........................................................................

Last week we used pastels and learned how to develop blending, shading and line work. It was so different to working in pencil. The children have chosen which mediums they wish to explore over the next few weeks in preparation of their final piece that they will create next term. Pastel work was messy, fun and very popular.

Some wonderful work again and the children are loving the creative time they are having in class. Their finished work is fabulous!

Mrs James.

................................................................................................................

Over the past few weeks we have been working on developing our drawing skills and this set of work shows our original portraits that have been quartered and then one quarter has been reworked with our new skills. I think the improvement is brilliant and you can really see development of skills in the top left corner of each original drawing.

A drawing of Omar where the top left quarter has been reworked. The top left quarter of the original drawing has been reworked to include more line and shading detail.

The top left quarter has been reworked to add more line and tone detail. The difference in the eye is really good.

In order to develop these skills independently we have had an independent creative mission in class. This is some of the work that has been produced.

Well done to everyone,

Mrs James.

Penygawsi Eco and Outdoor Learning Maths- Fraction Wall.

Week 2

Today we continued with our Penygawsi Eco themed and Outdoor Learning week and made a fraction wall in maths. We used sticks as a natural resource. We worked in groups of 3 and found this a bit challenging as some of the children couldn't decide who was doing what role and that they all had to join in with the maths and not just collect the sticks! On reflection we decided to try the activity again tomorrow and have a timer for a shorter amount of time. The children said that they would allocate roles and devise a plan before they start. Fingers crossed we will see an improvement. Failure is an option if it means that we learn from the opportunity and it helps us to further develop our skills. On the plus side we really enjoyed the sunshine and are loving learning outside.

Please will all parents complete the survey on blended learning. Click on the link below.

Thanks,

Mrs James.

Week 2. Creating a Character for Descriptive Writing.

It is outdoor leaning week this week and we started off with some language work outside. We also took on an Eco stance and decided to use materials from the natural environment instead of using man made materials to create our character for descriptive writing. We worked in pairs and created together. The pairs had to discuss a character profile and think about lots of information about its life. This was to give it an identity. We had fun and there were lots of interesting things discussed. We will use this to help us write some description.

Week 2 WB 19/4/21

Everyone has settled back really well from our first week although we were all very tired on Friday.

This week is outdoor learning week and the children need suitable footwear and a coat for working outdoors. The weather does look as though it is going to be fine so fingers crossed the sun will shine on us.

This week we are going to continue our work on the human body and will be looking more into senses/organs and their functions. We will be continuing to learn new skills on google slides and working on our presentations. The art skills we are learning this week will cover line, tone and shape. In Language we are working on descriptive writing and maths work is fractions and problem solving.

A reminder that PE kit is to be worn on Monday please.

Spelling information- When the children returned to school after the lockdown they were reassessed on spelling using the Big Spell assessment. Judging on their scores, I placed them on the relevant list that the assessment criteria suggested, regardless of the list that they moved on to during their time working at home. The children were tested on a variety of words from a variety of lists. It is their ability to be able to recall the spellings to use in their writing that is is important. It is not just about learning for the test and moving through the lists but how they recall and spell a variety of words in their work. Every child was given a copy of their new list to take home. If you need another copy then please email me.

Home learning for this week is on fractions. Take a look at j2e5 on Wednesday.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs James.

Week 1 Starting off with portraiture.

We thoroughly enjoyed starting off with portraiture this week. We wanted to see what we could do independently. We produced pencil portraits of our fellow classmates and then discussed what we needed to do to improve. Next week we will learn about line, tone, shape and texture and practise using these skills on our work. I think you'll agree that the children did a great job indeed!

Week 1 Where do these organs go?

Today Waun Fach have been learning all about the human organs and where they think they are placed in the human body. We realised that we have a great deal to learn. This was a fun activity and we can't wait to learn more.

Week 1 WB 12/4/21

Together Stronger

This term our Summer Term theme is Together Stronger. We have devised our plan and are going to look at who the important people in our lives are that have supported us throughout the Covid pandemic. We have been inspired by the artwork of others during this time and plan to make art to represent these people. We will look at portraiture and will learn the skills to produce a portrait of someone in our family or local community. We will be learning a variety of art skills. The artwork will be displayed in a virtual gallery at the end of term.

Reminder that PE kit needs to be worn on a Monday. Home learning is to begin to make a presentation on the organs of the human body on google slides. Take a look on j2e5 on Wednesday.

Blended Learning in Waun Fach.

Blended learning: an approach to learning that combines face-to-face, distance, digital and online learning experiences.

The face-to-face learning that takes place should complement the other aspects by using the strengths of each mode of delivery- Face-to-face learning and distance learning should complement each other and be driven by a single curriculum. It should be underpinned by good quality teaching- Blended Learning Guidance CSC June 2020.

This term we are going to be using a blended learning approach. The feedback, engagement and work produced during the online learning was incredible and I was so pleased with how everyone dealt with it.

We want to take on some of those strategies and good practice and put them into our day to day learning at home and school. As a parent you can help me with this- I would like you to encourage and support your child with their home learning as you usually do but not to correct the work for them but to encourage them to edit their work by themselves.

The home learning will not always need to be finished as we will work on these skills and the work started at home, in class.

Think of it as one continuous cycle of work. In the afternoons we will be organising our time into bubbles, missions and independent work. Children work in a bubble (not a covid one) but a bubble with their teacher where I focus on and teach new skills. This could be working on and finishing the task set for home learning for example. In missions the children will work independently on differentiated tasks to practise the skills the have learned and the independent task is working independently.

I am going to send home a survey to see how you feel about blended learning. Please make every effort to complete it and tell me your thoughts.

Thanks for your support,

Mrs James.

Happy Easter!

Enjoy the Easter holidays. You all deserve a nice rest and break. I hope the Easter bunny visits.

See you all soon,

Mrs James.

Spring Term 2021

As you all are aware our topic this term is 'Love Where You Live' and we have decided as a class to help our local community by learning all about plants and planting seeds to sell to those who live around us and to help people grow food in their gardens. This is a STEM project which concentrates on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We have been learning about seed germination and plant growth, we will be devising a suitable online platform to show what we have grown and for people to order our plants, we need to think about sustainable containers to put our seedlings in and we have been working on our money skills and using data so that we can account for what we have and what we sell.

I know that you have all been thoroughly enjoying this topic so far and I cannot wait to see your successful planting over the next few weeks. It has not been easy doing all of this remotely but you have all worked so hard and it has been wonderful to see.

Diolch,

Mrs James.
