Un Llais - School Council

2024 - 2025

This year's School Council are:

* Eleri Rees and Isaac Jones

* Elodie Wescott and Albert Trewarthur

* Charlotte Roberts and Jack Hughes

* Tal Evans and Tereze Arente

* Ayra Arsalan and Izzy Parr-Shek

The Role of Un Llais

Our School Council, is a committee of pupils who act as representatives of their classmates when discussing school issues with the Committee Lead, Headteacher and school staff. Committee members have been elected to represent the views of all pupils and also to improve their school.

Why Should We Have a School Council?

At Penygawsi, we believe that there are lots of reasons to have a school council. The most important one being, Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives. We know that a school council can provide a meaningful way for our pupils to voice their opinions and have their views taken seriously on decisions that would impact them. Evidence and experience from schools all over the country shows that a school council, which is nurtured and supported effectively, helps to improve many aspects of school life. We strongly believe that pupil voice committees, like school council, give our pupils the opportunity to lead and solve problems as a team.

Croeso Pawb! This is the new Super Ambassador web page.  Here you will find out everything you need to know about Children's Rights and the work we are doing to help improve our school for us pupils.

What is the Purpose of the Super Ambassador Scheme?

To teach children more about their rights under the UNCRC, and to involve primary school children in the work of the Child Commissioner for Wales to bring positive changes for children in Wales.

How it works?

Schools are asked to elect two Super Ambassadors at the beginning of every year. Super Ambassadors have three jobs. These are to:

  • Inform other pupils in our school about the Commissioner and her powers.
  • Make sure other pupils know about about children’s rights under the UNCRC.
  • Do special missions for the Commissioner in our school – these inform the work of the Commissioner's office and have a real impact on their work and on children’s rights in Wales.

Who is the Child Commissioner for Wales?

Rocio Cifuentes is the Children’s Commissioner for Wales.  She was appointed this role in April 2022, and will hold the post for seven years.  Her role is to promote and protect children’s rights in Wales.  Before starting as Commissioner, Rocio Cifuentes was Chief Executive of the charity Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team (EYST) Wales. She helped to set up this charity in 2005.  At the same time as running EYST, Rocio also served on the Wales Committee for the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and chaired the Welsh Refugee Coalition.  She has previously taught in a college, worked in youth homelessness and set up a charity for young people with mixed abilities called Mixtup.  Rocio is a fluent Spanish speaker, but has started to learn Welsh.
