Multicultural meal cooking activity 

As part of our topic this term, we have been exploring different cultures around the world. Within our research, we have learnt many different foods from various countries. We will be combining our Humanities topic learning with our Maths skills, of mass and capacity, to cook and taste multi-cultural meals.

Please complete this form to give consent before Wednesday.

If you have any issues or concerns, please come and see me after I have dismissed the children on the yard at the end of the school day.

Here are the foods we will be tasting along with the ingredients:

• Jollof Rice - White rice, tinned tomatoes, white onion, tomato puree, chicken stock, garlic, curry powder. 
• Kompot - Strawberries, apples, raspberries, granulated sugar. 
• Rarebit - White Bread, Grated Mild Cheddar Cheese, Worcestershire Sauce, Milk, Eggs.
•  Cardamom Fudge - White Chocolate, Ground Cardamom, Sweetened Condensed Milk, Salt.

Christmas Concert Costumes

Thank you to those who have already sent in their Christmas concert outfits. Those that have not yet sent in the costumes for the concert, please can you bring them in tomorrow (Monday), as we need time to check the costumes and make any other accessories in school, this week.

Carols by Candlelight, Monday 16th December at 5pm.

We are very excited to announce our very first community concert at the new school.

We would love to see faces old and new come and join us for an evening of festive fun as we sing some classic Christmas carols around the Christmas tree on the school's plaza.

Tickets are £2 and can be exchanged for a tea or coffee, and a mince pie on the day.  You can buy your tickets on the day or from the school's office beforehand.  You can also send an envelope into school with your child, with the money in and labelled with your child's name and the amount of tickets you would like.

All our families, neighbours and the wider community are welcome.  So why not come along with your child/children and bring your friends and family with you.  We look forward to seeing everyone and spreading some festive cheer.

Christmas Concert Tickets

This year we are performing a Key Stage 2 Christmas Concert show called Christmas Around the World, The Real Saint Nick. There will be 2 performances held; the first being on Wednesday 11th December at 6pm and the second show on Thursday 12th December at 1:30pm. Tickets are priced at £2 each. Each child will be allocated 3 tickets per show.

To purchase tickets, please send the correct amount of money to school with your child in a clearly labelled envelope. Be sure to include the following details:

A message from PTA

There will be an opportunity to collect any remaining Christmas items at pick up this Tuesday (12th) from the area by the school office. If you aren't able to make it, please don't worry - items will be sent home with the children later this week.

We are still awaiting delivery of the teddies and coasters, but will keep you updated on arrival.

If you missed out on ordering, our shop will re-open this Friday (15th), and will remain open until midday on the 24th November. Following this, there will be no further opportunities to order. If you have any questions, please contact the PTA on pta25@hwbcymru.net

Reminder

Please ensure your child brings their bookbags into school on their designated reading day, regardless of whether they have finished their books or not. I understand life can get busy with outside activities and family life, but pupils should be reading on a regular basis, not just the day before their books are due to be returned. Some of the books are becoming lengthy and will require more than one sitting. Apart from those on novels, all pupils should be able to read the books they bring home within a week, providing they are given the opportunity to read on more than one occasion per week. Reading is fundamental to everything we do, therefore it is vital that pupils have as much reading time as possible.

Book Fair begins 21/10/24

Your child will have opportunity to visit the book fair from Monday. However, it will be open until Thursday. This year, we will open it during Parents Evening, if you are interested in buying a book, this must be bought with cash. The children will get to view it on Friday and look at all the new books. If you would like your child to purchase a book, please bring in the money in a labelled envelope. 

Each book bought, raises money for the school and we are hoping to purchase new books for our Heart Spaces.

Learn Its check - We completed a Learn Its check last Friday which your child should have brought home with them. They can use this to practise the sums at home through the week ready for a timed test every Friday. Your child will then bring home their tests each Friday so you can see the score they received that day. On the test it will also say their 'Beat that score' which will be their highest achieved score on that level in Year 4. Times tables are a crucial fundamental skill within Mathematical development, if your child could practise these on a regular basis it would be hugely beneficial within our classwork throughout the year. There are many games, chants, online games that can help with this for practical fun practise throughout your daily routines. E.G. Chant as you walk up the stairs, quick fire games in the car, times table bingo, J2 blast on an electronic device etc. 

Most children have completed a spelling assessment and know what list they will be working on. If your child comes home with a new list on Monday, please begin at week 1. If your child comes home with a list that they were already learning last year, it will have the week they are working on currently circled. Please could they practise their spellings at home over the week in readiness for our first spelling test on Monday 16th September.

Croeso Nol Pawb! Welcome Back Everyone!

I can not wait to see you tomorrow morning and hear all about the adventures you have had over the summer.  I hope you have had a wonderful time with friends and family, and are rested and ready to start your Year 4 journey. I am looking forward to working with you all this year.

Drinks

We ask that all children come to school with a labelled drinks bottle with either flavoured water or still/sparkling water in.  There is to be NO squash or fizzy drinks in these bottles as we are a healthy school.

Snack

The children will have the opportunity to eat a small snack every day at breaktime.  We encourage that these snacks are a piece of fruit or vegetable.  If you are sending your child in with grapes, they MUST be cut into safe segments as these are a high choking risk when whole.  If your child has whole grapes they will NOT be able to eat them on school property for health and safety reasons.

PE

The children's PE day will continue to be Tuesday this year and they are to come to school dressed ready to participate in the physical activity.  We ask that they wear the following:

* Navy leggings/joggers/shorts

* White polo shirt/t-shirt

*Trainers

* Navy zip up jacket or hoodie for colder days - Please ensure these are labelled clearly with your child's name in case they remove them throughout the day.

Please note that NO jewellery is to be worn on PE days - it needs to be removed at home prior to coming to school.

Reading Books

I will sending home the children's reading books and reading day by the end of next week when I have had the opportunity to listen to each individual child read.  Please continue to read any books from home whilst you wait for the school reading book to be sent home.

Creative Arts

During the year, the children will have a multitude of opportunities to get their creative juices flowing.  This will mean that they could get a little messy from time to time.  Please could you send into school an old, labelled shirt or t-shirt with your child by the end of next week. This will be kept in class and used for creative sessions throughout the year, with the aim to be protect the children's uniform, as we appreciate the cost involved in replacing it.

It still feels very surreal to be saying "School is out for summer!" It certainly doesn't feel like summer with the weather but we can hope the sunshine will make an appearance for us during the holidays.

It has been a pleasure to work with your children and yourselves over the last 2 years.  From their 1st day in juniors/Year 3 to their last day in Year 4, I can honestly say each and every one of them has progressed greatly and developed in confidence, embracing school life in KS2 enthusiastically. They are most definitely ready for the adventure of Year 5 now!! I hope you all have an enjoyable summer. We look forward to welcoming you into our brand new school building on Wednesday 4th September.

Cinema + Bowling Trip - We will be leaving around 9:30am and will return back to school before the end of the normal school day.  All Children MUST wear school uniform. They will need a packed lunch, with a drink in a bag to carry themselves. The children can bring a small NUT FREE snack to eat whilst watching the film.

See below for information about Pontypridd Rugby training sessions:

Dear Parents and Carers, 

Pontypridd Schools Rugby Union will be holding open training sessions at Pontypridd High School CF37 4SF on Thursday June 13th and 20th. These will start at 4pm and finish at 5:30pm. 

These will be a full contact session and all players must attend a Pontypridd primary school and be in years 5/6 in September 24. The sessions are the start of the process to select our squad for the 2024/25 season. Other trials will then start at the end of August.

Penygawsi Book Swap

Next week is the 'Great Big Green Week' - the UK's biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. The theme for this year is 'swaps'. 

The Eco Committee have decided to run a 'Book Swap' in school as part of this celebration. We usually have so many books at home that we don't look at anymore and they could give so much enjoyment to someone else instead of sitting on a shelf. We ask that every child donates two books (or one, if you'd prefer) to our book swap, so we can create a range of choice. The Eco Committee will then set up a swap shop next Tuesday (11th) and each child will have the opportunity to choose a book to take home (free).  

Please bring in your donated books (2 if possible) on Friday or at the latest on Monday morning, to give the Eco Committee time to sort them into age groups.

As part of our aim to support each pupil to achieve their potential and to ensure their emotional and social needs are being met, we are fortunate to work with SHINE again this term.  It is a programme being offered to schools in RCT, by professionals from Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).  They will be doing a class workshop based on ‘Worries and Anxieties’ during this term.  If you do not want your child to be a part of this session, please send an email to the school admin. 

If your child has been identified as needing one to one or small group sessions, I will discuss this with you.

They will also be offering Parent Workshops throughout the term.  Further information on these will follow shortly.

Shine practitioners invite you to view the attached video which showcases the new and exciting Schools In Reach Emotional Wellbeing Service, known as SHINE. A practitioner will be based in our school once a fortnight to support the emotional wellbeing needs of the school.

World Down Syndrome Day - Please see information below.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

We have had a fantastic autumn term together in Year 4, learning lots and having a tonne of fun in the process! The children surely do deserve a happy, healthy Christmas break. Thank you all so much for attending the Upbeat Wales assembly performance in the last week of term. The pupils were delighted that so many of you came to see what they had been learning over the past half term in music. Lights, Camera, Action!

As you are aware we have been working with Upbeat Wales for the last few weeks to develop our percussion skills.  As we are nearing the end of the workshops, we are excited to invite you into school on Wednesday 25th October to watch our short performance to showcase our skills.

We have been working within our classes to develop these skills so therefore the performances will be separate and we invite parent/carers for each year at different times throughout the morning.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

We are very excited to inform you that we have been lucky enough to secure a seven-week project with Upbeat Wales for Years 4 to 6.  Upbeat Wales are a music and dance company who are determined to ensure the children in Wales get the best possible opportunities to find joy in creating performances.  They are a team of experienced facilitators with a specialism in offering whole class music and dance tuition.

We have booked these workshops as part of our Expressive Arts topic ‘Lights, Camera Action!’ This project will take the place of a   We will be delving into the wonderful world of junk percussion, where the children will have the opportunity to plan, create and perform a piece of music in the style of Stomp.  At the end of the project we are excited to invite you in to watch the performance; a date will be confirmed closer to the time.

This amazing experience has been booked instead of an off-sight visit for this half term and we ask for a £10 contribution towards the seven workshops.  We are sure you will agree that this experience will have a positive impact on the children’s wellbeing as well as inspiring future musicians and performers.

Week Beginning 11th September

We had a great first week in Year 4, settling back into our class and embracing school life again. It was lovely to see all the children and hear all their stories of a very busy fun-filled summer holidays!

We began our school year by creating some self-portraits and writing our own targets to achieve during the Autumn term. Our aim is to revisit these at the end of the Christmas term to review if each individual has achieved their self-set goal.

We also created our new class charter, and linked these to the Children's Rights. We decided as a class on the most important rights that supported our school life, using a diamond nine.

Lastly, we held our first class debate, which many of the children embraced very well. We discovered that it can be tricky to counter argue something that we strongly believe in with facts and reasons, but everyone had a good first attempt and made firm decisions.

Fit 4 Fun Football Sessions

Fit 4 Fun will be offering afterschool sessions on a Tuesday for Years 3 and 4 to attend a football club. If you are interesting in your child taking part in these session, please visit the link to book a space. The afterschool club will begin on Tuesday 12th September, for 7 weeks.

I hope you have all had a well deserved summer break and are refreshed, ready for another fun-filled year ahead. It was a pleasure to work with you all last year, and I am looking forward to another year of growing and achieving together!

I will update the class page with any information at the end of each week. However, if there is any urgent information that needs to be shared with you before the end of the week, I will contact you via text. 

All children will need a drink and a healthy nut free snack everyday.  Please ensure they are labelled clearly with the children's name.  All clothing should also be labelled . 

 Our PE day will be on a Tuesday again this year, starting from Tuesday 12th September. Children will come into school wearing their school P.E kit. They will need plain navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, a navy jacket/hoody and trainers.

This week will be about settling back into our classroom and catching up with each other after a long break away. We will discuss our up-to-date likes/dislikes, strengths/weaknesses and create a new class charter, using class rules that we have decided to be the most important over the past year together.

Wow! I can't believe that this is the final week of year 4. I have really enjoyed having the chance to get to know each of the children as individuals and watching them shine.  Our time together has definitely flown by.  We have had a very busy year that has been filled with lots of hard work, laughter and fun. I am extremely proud of what all of the children have achieved this year and I am sure that they will continue to make brilliant progress throughout their time in year five.

Thank you for all of your support throughout this academic year. I am looking forward to a fun filled last week with the children before they embark on a well deserved summer break.

Ponty aschools Rugby Trials
Dear Parent / Carer 

Pontypridd Schools Rugby Union are holding trials for the district squad 2023-24.

Following the recent skills sessions we can now confirm that our official trials will take place on Saturday 2nd September at Pontypridd High School. All players who attend a Pontypridd school and are in Year 5 or 6 in September 2023 are invited to attend. 

Players should report at 9.30am for a 10am start. This trial should be finished by midday. 

This will be the start of the official trial process with further trials being held on the following Thursday (7th September), Saturday (9th September), and then every Thursday and Saturday until the squad is chosen. We would anticipate the final squad being selected by the 23rd September.

Cross Country Events 

If you would like your child to attend the cross country events  on On June 22^nd at Llwyncrwn Primary and June 29^th at Gwaunmeisgyn Primary then please use the following link to book your child's place. Please ignore the payment link because the school is going to cover the cost.

Years 3,4,5,and 6 have been invited to attend a Cross Country event on the following dates:

The event starts at 3:45pm and there is a cost of £2 per child which the school has agreed to cover.

You will need to transport your child to the event and stay with them for the duration.  You will be able to collect your child early on these days to get them there on time. A link for a form that you will need to complete will be posted on to the class page in the next few days.

For the final half term we will be looking at 'changing me' in our jigsaw sessions, The learning intentions for this topic are:

• How babies grow where we will be understanding how babies grow up.
• Babies where we will be learning about the things that a baby needed to grow. We will talking about the fact that a baby begins life inside the mums womb.
• Outside body changes where were will be looking at how our bodies begin to change as we get older e.g. we get taller. We will also be looking at the different feelings that coexist with change.How our bodies change when we grow up and th e.g. we get taller.
• Family stereotypes where we will be learning about stereotypical family roles and how they have changed over time.
• Looking ahead where we will be thinking about moving up into year 5.                                     If you have any questions regarding this let me know either by email, on the gate or by phoning the office.

Dear Parent / Carer, 

If your child (boy or girl)  is interested in trialling for the Pontypridd Schools Rugby Union team in September please see the email below. PSRU can also be followed on facebook - Pontypridd Schools Under 11's. 

As part of the trial process we will be holding skill sessions on Thursdays 8th, 15th and 22nd June for all pupils who attend a Pontypridd school and are currently in Year 4 or 5.

The sessions will be held at Pontypridd High School, Cilfynydd CF374SF . Players should report to the playing fields at 4pm for a 4.15pm start. We should be finished by 5.30pm.

Formal trials will then be held towards the end of August/beginning of September. Further details to follow in due course.

Hot Weather

It is supposed to be extremely warm this week. Please ensure that you children have applied suncream before they come to school. Please also ensure that the children bring a water bottle and a hat.

We had lots of fun at the Guildhall this week. We followed maps to help us to locate different artefacts and features. All of the children were extremely sensible on our walk to and from the Guildhall, they are a credit to you all and I am so proud of them.

Walk to School Week

Monday sees the start of RCT's 'Walk to School' week. If you are able to, please support this initiative by walking to school as many times as you are able to.  In class we will be asking how long each person who has walked has taken and we aim find out how many 'get active' minutes we will achieve as a whole school over the week by walking to school.

Coronation Celebrations

We have has lots of fun celebrating the Queen's Coronation this week. We completed a comprehension about the life of King Charles, we compared the Kings Coronation to the Queens Coronation, we created crown collages and we decorated crowns read for out Coronation Lunch. 

Map Reading

We have been looking at maps of Llantrisant from different time periods this week. We located some of the features that we can still see today and we also discovered features that do not exist today.

Food Tasting

The children enjoyed trying different types of French food in preparation for their new topic. W tried croissants, pan au chocolat, brie and baguette.

The children can wear red, white and blue coloured clothing to school today to mark the King's Coronation,

The children will be taking part in a variety of activities to celebrate the King's Coronation. These activities will take place in their houses.

In the afternoon, we will be holding a whole school picnic. The children can bring in a snack plate for this. Please ensure that their plates are clearly marked and that they do not contain anything that needs to be refrigerated. Please also remember that we are a nut free school so the snacks cannot contain any nuts.

If anyone has any picnic blankets at home that you wouldn't mind lending to us for the picnic, please could you send them to school with your child for us to use during the picnic.

World down Syndrome Day- wear crazy socks to school.

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance that any other day

Believe it or not, socks get people talking!

On Tuesday 2st March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed and wear them to school!

They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is back at Penygawsi on Tuesday 14th March. Your child will have the opportunity to buy a book during the day. Please bring cash in an envelope if you wanted to buy a book. The book fair will close on Friday 17th March. 

The Properties of Shape

The children have been working hard this week identifying the properties of 2D shapes. They have been drawing lines of symmetry, measuring right angles with a protractor and matching 2D shapes to their properties.

This week has been very busy but lots of fun.

The Eisteddfod 

We spent Wednesday celebrating Welsh culture. There was a brilliant atmosphere in the hall and I am really proud of all of the children for their fabulous performances of the class poem.

The Renaissance 

We flew back in time to the Renaissance period this week where we learned all about what life was like during this period. We learned a Renaissance dance, we listened to Renaissance music and we learned about Renaissance houses, school and food. It was lots of fun.

School Trip to Cardiff Museum Art Gallery

As part of our topic this term, we have been able to secure a trip to Cardiff Museum.  During this trip we will visit the art gallery and complete a workshop about colour.  The trip will take place on Thursday 16th February.  Pupils will need to wear school uniform and bring a packed lunch.

This is Me

This term our topic is called 'this is me', an Expressive Arts themed topic with a focus on self-portraits. This half term, we are going to be focussing on creating self-portraits in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci . We have already started to look at some of his paintings. Throughout the past few weeks, we have been learning to draw at each of our facial features in detail. Through drawing our facial features we have been developing our sketching skills through different techniques including blending, cross-hatching, and hatching. We will shortly be combing these skills to create our own self-portrait.

After half term, we will be exploring the work of Pablo Picasso. Picasso's paintings are completely different to Da Vinci's which will bring something new to out work. Through Picasso's self-portraits we will be able to learn about cubism as well as the use of colour. The children will also get an opportunity to create a self-portrait in the style of Picasso.

Additionally, we will also be using our literacy skills to write adventure stories based on famous paintings. Lastly, we will be using out math skills to explore shape in Pablo Picasso's cubist paintings and money through the price of artwork.

Last week we were lucky to have a visit from a local artist who came to talk to us about her work. The children were very inspiring. We have also planned a trip to Cardiff Museum art gallery on the 16th February. Further details of this trip will be added to this page soon.

It was lovely to see everyone back in school this week and to hear all about the Christmas Break.

We have had lots of fun this week learning all about our new topic 'This is me'. As part of our introduction tooth's topic we went on a scavenger hunt to find missing letters that spelt an artists name. It was so much fun! We also played a game that involved us rolling a dice to determine what shape each of the features of a face were going to be. Some of the portraits that the children made were spectacular and I can't wait to see where this topic takes us.

This week new had the change to demonstrate everything that we have learned throughout out superstructures topic. We received a design brief from the team that are building the new school. 

The design brief asked us to combine multiple skills to help us to design and build a monument that represents Roald Dahl for the new school.

It has been another extremely busy week in Dosbarth Caerau with lots of fun to be had. This week we complete an experiment to discover the material that is best for building a raft out of, it was so much fun. 

Thriving Thursday

For Thriving Thursday we discussed the importance of positive thoughts. We then went outside to use the environment to create images of ourselves and the things that we like.

On Thursday 20^th October, we will be holding our annual Harvest Festival.  After completing this virtually last year, we are pleased that pupils will be able to once again come together to celebrate.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. A Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon.  This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

At Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year, not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but also to help others that are less fortunate than us. We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity, The Food Bank.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. We are asking that, if possible, the children consider donating an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during the week of our virtual assembly.

After our virtual celebrations, the School Council and staff will work to package any donations to send them to the food bank ready for local families who will be so very grateful to receive them.

On Friday the 14^th of October the Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving at school.  The children will have an opportunity on this day to view the books available to purchase.  THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PURCHASE ANY BOOKS ON THIS DAY.

Between Monday 17^th and Wednesday 19^th of October, all pupils will have an opportunity to purchase a book of their choice throughout the day.  Please ensure that your child has their money in a sealed envelope or a purse/wallet.

On Friday afternoon, we held the elections for the eco club committee. All of the candidates gave amazing speeches and it was so difficult for us to choose our representatives. After a difficult vote, the successful candidates are:

We all really enjoyed taking part in the national street dancing class alongside lots of schools across the country. Here are some pictures of all of the fun that we had.

It has been a very busy week in year four this week. We have had lots of fun exploring different types of bridges across Wales and I am looking forward to exploring these structures in more detail this week.

Reading

All of the the children came home with book bags on Friday. Inside their book bags will be their reading diary which will state which day will be their reading day- this will be the day that they need to bring their book bag to school each week. This week we held elections for the School Council. Each candidate gave a speech in front of the whole class. Standing up in front of the class can be extremely daunting for the children and I am so proud of them all for their efforts. After a difficult, we came to a decision as a class. We had a fantastic time at Mambos indoor play centre last Friday. All of the children had lots of fun, and I am extremely proud of how well behaved they were. Da dawn pawb!

We had a fun start to the year in Caerau. The children have all settled in really well and are really excited to begin the new school year. The children were introduced to our new topic, 'Super Structures' through two problem solving activities that involved them having to make a structure out of both paper and spaghetti. The children had lots of fun trying to build their structures.

Mambos school trip (postponed from the summer term). If you have not yet completed the payment, or returned the permission slip for our school trip, please can you do so ASAP. Children will need to wear school uniform, and bring a packed lunch.

Spellings

The children should continue to work on the same spelling list that they were on at the end of year 3. They do not need to go back to the first list. If you are unsure which list this is, or if you need a copy of the list, please let me know and I will send the list home. Spell checks will begin on Monday 19th September. and will take place every Monday after that.

End of day pick-up

A polite reminder that when picking your child up at the end of the day, please follow the arrows on the floor and continue moving until you reach the front of the queue. When you reach the front, your child will come and greet you. If your child is not yet out on the yard, or if you need to speak to your child's teacher, can we kindly ask that you stand near the sheltered outdoor classroom to keep the line moving? This will ensure that teachers can see the children leaving the yard safely with their adults. Thankyou for your cooperation.

Welcome to Caerau’s class page. This is where you will find all of the important information you will need each week. I will update this page every Sunday with any new information.

Hello from me, Miss O’Brien I hope that you have had an amazing summer and that you are excited for another fun and busy year in school. I had the opportunity to teach the children for short periods of time last year, and I am really looking forward to getting to know you all better this year.

Children will enter and leave the school via the school side gate, unless they have a sibling in the Foundation Phase. Drop off times are going to be the same times as last year, between 8:59am and 9am. Pick up time will be at 3:30.

All children will need to bring a water bottle and a healthy snack to school each day. Please ensure that they are labelled clearly with your child’s name.

Our PE day will be a Tuesday, starting Tuesday 13^th September. The children will need to come to school wearing their PE kit.

This week we will be focussing on getting to know each other. We will be sharing our summer news and we will be discussing our aspirations for the future. We also have some fun activities planned that will introduce us to our new topic. More will be revealed at the end of the week.

Remember to have an early night, ready for a busy day tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing you all again.

WYTHNOS 6 - Week Beginning 18th July 2022

Wow, can you believe we have reached the last week in Year 4?!  It is crazy how fast the time has gone.  It has been such an amazing year and I have loved teaching each and every one of you.  It has been a pleasure getting to know you and watching your individual characters bloom and grow!  Thank you for making this year lots of fun!  I wish you all the best for your next school chapter in Year 5 - You are going to have a blast!

With the forecast looking to be extremely hot this week, pupils can continue to wear loose clothing that is in the school colours.  We ask that you please ensure sun cream is applied before school and your child comes to school with a refillable water bottle.

We have Fit For Fun on Wednesday this week NOT Tuesday.  Please ensure your child has a hat and sensible clothing for their PE session.

If your child did not return their reading book and diary to school last week as requested, could they please bring them in  by Tuesday at the latest this week?

As the weather is heating up and we are spending more time working outside the classroom, it is really important that the children come to school with sun cream applied.  If they need to top up throughout the day, they may bring their own sun cream into school as long as they are able to apply it safely independently.  It would also be beneficial if they have a sun hat with them for use at break times as when working outdoors.  Please ensure your child has a refillable water bottle with them each day too.

Global Day - The children will spend the day jetting off around the world to a range of different countries to learn about their landscapes, wildlife and culture.  The children will also learn about our online charity bank Lend With Care which we set up several years ago but due to COVID have been unable to use over the past few years.

Lendwithcare is a revolutionary way to help people in low-income countries to work their way out of poverty with dignity. Through Lendwithcare, we can lend as little as £15 to fund a small business. Once our money is repaid, we can choose to recycle our loan to support more low-income entrepreneurs, make a donation or withdraw our funds.

Lendwithcare is an initiative of poverty fighting charity, CARE International UK. They currently operate in eleven countries and you can find out more about how Lendwithcare works here.

100% of the money loaned through Lendwithcare goes to the low-income entrepreneurs you choose to support.

Global Day will see us relaunching this account with School Council discussing which entrepreneurs they feel need our support the most.  Keep an eye out on this page towards the end of the week to find out who we have chosen to lend our money to.

Farewell Miss Morriss

Unfortunately this week is Miss Morriss' last week with us.  In fact her last day will be Wednesday.  Miss Morriss has been with us for the past 10 weeks and it has been a pleasure to have her working with us as she carried out her final placement for her teaching degree.  Over the term, she has planned and delivered a wide range of engaging and exciting learning experiences for the pupils and she has become a valued member of Caerau.  She will be greatly missed.  I am sure you will join me in thanking Miss Morriss for her hard work and dedication and wish her every success for the future.

To celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee we will be having an afternoon tea party on Wednesday 25th May.  The children are invited to wear red, white and blue to school that day and we are asking that each child brings in a plate of food of their choice and a drink for the while school yard party in the afternoon.  Please could you send your child into school with a labelled plate of food that is covered and a drink on the day?

Your child came home on Friday with their new school reading book.  We are very pleased to be able to return to paper books for our school readers.  I listened to all children last week and assessed which level they should now be on.  It was lovely to see many moving up a level.  For those that have stayed on the same level, there is time to move up before the summer term ends.  If you read for at least 5 minutes every day this will improve, not only your fluency and expression, but also your comprehension.

Reading books will be changed every Friday and should be returned to school on a Thursday.  However, if your child finishes before a Thursday and wishes to change the book they are welcome to return it any day of the week. Can I please ask that you comment in your child's reading diary at least once during the week?  Your child is welcome to comment about their opinion on the book they have read but, I would like to have a comment from a parent/guardian about the child's fluency, expression and understanding of what they have read.

BIG SPELLING

Your child came home on Friday with their updated spelling list.  All children, unless told by me on Friday are to start at week 1 of the list they brought home.  Some may not have moved up a list as when assessed they still had gaps in the spelling rules that they may have previously learnt.  This is why we are asking all children to start at week 1 to ensure the children become more confident with those spelling patterns.

Spell Checks will take place every Monday morning, starting Monday 9th May.  There will be NO spell check this week, just spelling practise.

RCT Schools Easter Recycling Competition

We are entering the RCT Easter recycling competition this year. Please can you collect all the foil, plastic and cardboard from any Easter eggs you have, save them and bring them into school at the start of the new term.

The school with the highest recycling to pupil ratio will win, with prizes on offer! The winning school will receive £300!

Dear Parents / Carers,

I am really pleased to be able to announce that Mrs Rees in Dosbarth Caerau is pregnant.  This is always exciting news to be able to share.

Mrs Rees has no plans to finish at present and will be in school after the Easter holidays.  However, as it is becoming increasingly noticeable, she wished to share her exciting news with the school community.

Depending on the advice from HR regarding Covid and pregnant workers, it is possible that Mrs Rees may be in school until May half term or even the summer holidays.

When Mrs Rees has made a decision, I will contact parents in Mrs Rees’s class to inform them of the plans for cover during Mrs Rees’s maternity leave.

Newport County AFC Academy goalkeeper trials

An exctiting opportunity has arisen for your child to attend goalkeeping trials with Newport County AFC Academy, in partnership with South Wales Goalkeeping Centre (SWGK Centre).  The goalkeeper specific open trial recruitment event will take place on Wednesday 6^th April 2022, for this season’s U6 to U16 age groups.

The trial times by age group will be as follows:

Current U6 to U9 – 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm

Current U10 to U12 – 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm

Current U13 to U16 – 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm
