World Book Day

Thursday 6th March 2025

Curriculum Committee have been busy planning for all the pupils for World Book Day. They have decided on this year's theme; Dress up as your favourite BOOK character! Please can you bring your book to school as we will be partnering up with other classes to read and share a book with a buddy!

Eisteddfod Music Competition

As part of our Eisteddfod competitions in school, this year we have decided to celebrate the musical talents of the children in our school. We will be holding auditions for each musical instrument category during Wythnos Cymraeg next week (Week Beginning 17th February). These auditions will be held during lunchtimes or breaktimes, depending on the number of pupils auditioning. This will be a competition that is not practised within class/school, but gives children who have lessons and are learning to play instruments outside of school to showcase their talents and progress. We welcome singing as a talent too, however, please be mindful this will only include pupils who currently have singing lessons with a music teacher.  Could you please discuss with your child whether they would be interested in entering these competitions? They will need to play/sing a piece of music to a small audience initially, with the winner from each category then being required to play/sing the same piece of music to the whole school, during our Eisteddfod celebrations after half term. If your child would like to compete within any of these competitions, please ensure they come and see us to register their name by Wednesday 12th February, at the very latest. Any names given after this date, will not be able to enter. 

We cannot wait to see your performances!

Number Day

Thursday February 6th 2025

To celebrate the wonderful world of maths, we are having a day dedicated to number.  The children are invited to wear non-uniform and to design and make their very own number hat to wear to school on the day.  Be as creative as possible.  We will have a parade for everyone to see each other's mathematical masterpieces.  There will be a small prize for the most imaginative design in each class.  Get those creative juices flowing.

If you need a little inspiration, take a look at some of the ideas below.

We are looking forward to fun day of number and getting our mathematical minds working.  The children will take part in lots of activities where they can use previously taught skills and learn new skills too.

This year we are performing a Key Stage 2 Christmas Concert show called Christmas Around the World, The Real Saint Nick. There will be 2 performances held; the first being on Wednesday 11th December at 6pm and the second show on Thursday 12th December at 1:30pm. Tickets are priced at £2 each. Each child will be allocated 3 tickets per show.

We are very excited to announce our very first community concert at the new school.

Carols by Candlelight, Monday 16th December at 5pm.

We would love to see faces old and new come and join us for an evening of festive fun as we sing some classic Christmas carols around the Christmas tree on the school's plaza.

Tickets are £2 and can be exchanged for a tea or coffee, and a mince pie on the day.  You can buy your tickets on the day or from the school's office beforehand.  You can also send an envelope into school with your child, with the money in and labelled with your child's name and the amount of tickets you would like.

All our families, neighbours and the wider community are welcome.  So why not come along with your child/children and bring your friends and family with you.  We look forward to seeing everyone and spreading some festive cheer.

Christmas Concert Reminder 

This year we are performing a Key Stage 2 Christmas Concert show called Christmas Around the World, The Real Saint Nick. There will be 2 performances held; the first being on Wednesday 11th December at 6pm and the second show on Thursday 12th December at 1:30pm. Tickets are priced at £2 each. Each child will be allocated 3 tickets per show.

To purchase tickets, please send the correct amount of money to school with your child in a clearly labelled envelope. Be sure to include the following details:

For the concert this year, our class are taking a look at Christmas in China and in Africa.  In order to keep costs low for everyone, the children have been asked to wear a base layer of some kind (e.g. leggings, tracksuit, sports base layer, t-shirt/long sleeved top). These can be a dark colour to contrast with brightly coloured wraps/sashes etc. or a colour relating to their chosen country.  Red/yellow/gold for China and any bright colours for Africa.  We have some material/scarves and Chinese costumes and would appreciate any offerings of suitable fabric/costumes that children are able to bring.  Please send any items/costumes to school in a plastic bag with your child’s name on and an indication of which items are donations and can be altered/cut for use and which are to be returned home after the show. Suggested fabrics are bright colours, patterned eg. dragon/blossom/animal print, fur (fake only please), ribbon, grass skirts/wraps, tassels etc.  We may use face paint, please avoid sending any special/expensive items.

This year we are performing a Key Stage 2 Christmas Concert show called Christmas Around the World, The Real Saint Nick. For the concert this year, our class are taking a look at Christmas in China and in Africa.  In order to keep costs low for everyone, the children have been asked to wear a base layer of some kind (e.g. leggings, tracksuit, sports base layer, t-shirt/long sleeved top). These can be a dark colour to contrast with brightly coloured wraps/sashes etc. or a colour relating to their chosen country.  Red/yellow/gold for China and any bright colours for Africa.  We have some material/scarves and Chinese costumes and would appreciate any offerings of suitable fabric/costumes that children are able to bring.  Please send any items/costumes to school in a plastic bag with your child’s name on and an indication of which items are donations and can be altered/cut for use and which are to be returned home after the show. Suggested fabrics are bright colours, patterned eg. dragon/blossom/animal print, fur (fake only please), ribbon, grass skirts/wraps, tassels etc.  We may use face paint, please avoid sending any special/expensive items.

Message From Our Wonderful PTA

There will be an opportunity to collect any remaining Christmas items at pick up this Tuesday (12th) from the area by the school office. If you aren't able to make it, please don't worry - items will be sent home with the children later this week.

We are still awaiting delivery of the teddies and coasters, but will keep you updated on arrival.

Book Fair begins 21/10/24

Your child will have opportunity to visit the book fair from Monday. However, it will be open until Thursday. This year, we will open it during Parents Evening, if you are interested in buying a book, this must be bought with cash. The children will get to view it on Friday and look at all the new books. If you would like your child to purchase a book, please bring in the money in a labelled envelope. 

Each book bought, raises money for the school and we are hoping to purchase new books for our Heart Spaces.

Online Mathematics Parent Workshop

MacMillan Coffee Event - 3.45pm - 5.30pm

As well as a chance to have a cup of coffee and a cake and raise money for MacMillan, staff will also take parents around the school in small groups so that parents can see what their children are experiencing every day.

Croeso Nol Pawb! Welcome Back Everyone!

I can not wait to see you tomorrow morning and hear all about the adventures you have had over the summer.  I hope you have had a wonderful time with friends and family, and are rested and ready to start your Year 5 journey.

Drinks 

We ask that all children come to school with a labelled drinks bottle with either flavoured water or still water in.  There is to be NO squash or fizzy drinks in these bottles as we are a healthy school.

Snack

The children will have the opportunity to eat a small snack every day at breaktime.  We encourage that these snacks are a piece of fruit or vegetable.  If you are sending your child in with grapes, they MUST be cut into safe segments as these are a high chocking risk when whole.  If your child has whole grapes they will NOT be able to eat them on school property for health and safety reasons.

PE

The children's PE day will continue to be Tuesday this year and they are to come to school dressed ready to participate in the physical activity.  We ask that they wear the following:

* Navy leggings/joggers/shorts

* White polo shirt/t-shirt

*Trainers

* Navy zip up jacket or hoodie for colder days - Please ensure these are labelled clearly with your child's name in case they remove them throughout the day.

Please note that NO jewellery is to be worn on PE days - it needs to be removed at home prior to coming to school.

Reading Books

We will sending home the children's reading books and reading day by the end of next week when we have had the opportunity to listen to each individual child read.  Please continue to read any books from home whilst you wait for the school reading book to be sent home.

Creative Arts

During the year, the children will have a multitude of opportunities to get their creative juices flowing.  This will mean that they could get a little messy from time to time.  We ask that an old, labelled shirt or t-shirt is sent in with your child by the end of next week which we can keep in class and use for such creative sessions.  We want to be able to protect the children's uniform as we appreciate the cost involved in replacing it.

Swimming

Year 5 and 6 will be swimming this term and will need the following

* Swimming costume (no bikinis please, swimsuits or trunks please)

* Towel

* Plastic bag for wet clothing.

As we are on a limited timeframe, there will be no time for the children to shower and only rinse after they have been swimming.,  Therefore, no shampoo or body wash is needed.  For this reason, we suggest all those with long hair, come to school with it put up.

We will be starting our swimming sessions on Monday 16th September.

See below for information about Pontypridd Rugby training sessions:

Dear Parents and Carers, 

Pontypridd Schools Rugby Union will be holding open training sessions at Pontypridd High School CF37 4SF on Thursday June 13th and 20th. These will start at 4pm and finish at 5:30pm. 

These will be a full contact session and all players must attend a Pontypridd primary school and be in years 5/6 in September 24. The sessions are the start of the process to select our squad for the 2024/25 season. Other trials will then start at the end of August.

Penygawsi Book Swap

Next week is the 'Great Big Green Week' - the UK's biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. The theme for this year is 'swaps'. 

The Eco Committee have decided to run a 'Book Swap' in school as part of this celebration. We usually have so many books at home that we don't look at anymore and they could give so much enjoyment to someone else instead of sitting on a shelf. We ask that every child donates two books (or one, if you'd prefer) to our book swap, so we can create a range of choice. The Eco Committee will then set up a swap shop next Tuesday (11th) and each child will have the opportunity to choose a book to take home (free).  

Please bring in your donated books (2 if possible) on Friday or at the latest on Monday morning, to give the Eco Committee time to sort them into age groups.

SHINE PARENT DROP-IN SESSIONS

We are fortunate to offer Parent Drop-In Sessions with a professional from SHINE (who works for CAMHS) every other Wednesday between 9am and 9.45 am,  starting on the 8th of May.  If you would like to chat with a professional about your child's worries, or if you would like to access confidential support for yourself, please call in to speak to Rachel.

As part of our aim to support each pupil to achieve their potential and to ensure their emotional and social needs are being met, we are fortunate to work with SHINE again this term.  It is a programme being offered to schools in RCT, by professionals from Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).  They will be doing a class workshop based on ‘Worries and Anxieties’ during this term.  If you do not want your child to be a part of this session, please send an email to the school admin. 

If your child has been identified as needing one to one or small group sessions, your class teacher will discuss this with you.

They will also be offering Parent Workshops throughout the term.  Further information on these will follow shortly.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day! So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. 

Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

Week Commencing 8th January 2024

Mrs Rees sends her heartfelt thanks for all of the well wishes and Christmas gifts.  She was completely blown away by your kindness and support which is extremely appreciated.  She is recovering well at home and is being well looked after by her family and friends.

For the time being I (Mrs Boat) will be supporting your children with their learning as much as possible and I am looking forward to spending time with them all.
