I hope that you have had a lovely Easter break and are well rested for a busy Summer term! I'm looking forward to hearing about all your adventures and I hope the Easter Bunny delivered some lovely chocolate for you to enjoy.

At the end of last term, we noticed that a lot of names have washed off jumpers and cardigans - please re-label any uniform because it is getting warmer, the children will be taking them off more.

Weather - the weather looks lovely for the coming week, please put sun cream on your child before they come into school and remember a sun hat.

Read Write Inc Workshops

Learning to read is the most important thing your child will learn at our school. Everything else depends on it, so we do all we can to make sure every child learns to read quickly.  We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves.
You can help.

Throughout the year we will run a series of Reading Cafes for parents to learn how we are teaching your children to read, and learn how you can help at home.

This will be three consecutive workshops where I will model and teach you the strategies alongside your child.

  • Meeting 1 – An Introduction to Read Write Inc. Phonics . An overview of how we teach children to read.
  • Meeting 2 – Sounds How we teach children to read their first sounds.
  • Meeting 3 – Fred Talk - Fred Talk is how we teach children to blend sounds into words

If you commit to attending the workshops, we would be grateful if you would attend all three. Please select the Term you would prefer to come as we can make sure we have equal attendees.

    Eisteddfod Music Competition

As part of our Eisteddfod competitions in school, this year we have decided to celebrate the musical talents of the children in our school. We will be holding auditions for each musical instrument category during Wythnos Cymraeg next week (Week Beginning 17th February). These auditions will be held during lunchtimes or breaktimes, depending on the number of pupils auditioning. This will be a competition that is not practised within class/school, but gives children who have lessons and are learning to play instruments outside of school to showcase their talents and progress. We welcome singing as a talent too, however, please be mindful this will only include pupils who currently have singing lessons with a music teacher.  Could you please discuss with your child whether they would be interested in entering these competitions? They will need to play/sing a piece of music to a small audience initially, with the winner from each category then being required to play/sing the same piece of music to the whole school, during our Eisteddfod celebrations after half term. If your child would like to compete within any of these competitions, please ensure they come and see us to register their name by Wednesday 12th February, at the very latest. Any names given after this date, will not be able to enter.

We cannot wait to see your performances!

      Number Day

      Thursday February 6th 2025

To celebrate the wonderful world of maths, we are having a day dedicated to number.  The children are invited to wear non-uniform and to design and make their very own number hat to wear to school on the day.  Be as creative as possible.  We will have a parade for everyone to see each other's mathematical masterpieces.  There will be a small prize for the most imaginative design in each class.  Get those creative juices flowing.

If you need a little inspiration, take a look at some of the ideas below.

We are looking forward to fun day of number and getting our mathematical minds working.  The children will take part in lots of activities where they can use previously taught skills and learn new skills too.

We would love to invite some of our parents who work with numbers on a daily basis as part of their job role in to talk to the children during the day.  A parent questionnaire has been sent via text.  If you could take the time to complete it, we would be very grateful.  Click on the link below if you haven't already completed it.

          Reading Books Bags

Everyone took home a reading book bag last week. Please remember to comment or initial in the reading diary, so we know that your child has read at home. If your child has found their book/flashcards difficult then you can keep it another week to make sure they are confident before moving on. We understand how busy life can get, so if you have not written in the reading diary, we will assume that you have not had time to read that week and we will not change the book.

Reception parents, please read the letter inside your book bag, it will help you to support your child with the start of their reading journey.

Welcome back to a new term, a new year and for some of you a new class! We are so excited to see you all back and that I have the opportunity to welcome some of you back to my class again. I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and a relaxing holiday with your families.

Our topic for this term is 'A Splash of Colour' under the Expressive Arts AoLE, so there will be lots of opportunities to get creative and, hopefully, not too messy!!! To get our imaginations going and also help us plan together what we would like to do during the topic, on Friday our classroom will be turned into a 'Colour Factory'!!!

On Friday we will be having fun by donning our scientist's white shirts and goggles to investigate colour in several different ways. If you have an old white adult shirt your child can wear over their uniform on Friday, we would be very grateful (they may get messy). We have around 10 in class for those who don't.

PE - PE will now be on a WEDNESDAY and will be led by Liam from Fit for Fun. This will start next week- Wednesday 15th.

Forest School - I will let you know when Forest School will start back up again - the ground needs to be safe/dry enough in our forest area.

Home Learning - will continue to be on a Wednesday.

Reading books - For the children who already have reading books, new reading books will be sent out NEXT WEEK, giving me time to assess and regroup reading days where necessary.  For Reception children, reading books/bags will start this term. This will be a mix of wordless books, flashcards and reading books to build confidence during the start of their reading journey. More information will be sent out about this.

We would love to hear some traditions that you have in your own families at Christmas time. This week I will be uploading the last home learning of the term, this will involve uploading a short video explaining one or a few of your traditions that we will be able to watch together in class.

            About Me Card – Homework

An "About Me Card" is a one-page document that allows your child to express their personal views, strengths, preferences, and support needs. Its purpose is to offer a concise, person-centred overview that helps others, such as staff and teachers, quickly understand your child and ensure that the support we provide is consistent and tailored to their specific needs.

As a school, we take great pride in building strong relationships and truly getting to know our pupils. However, with your assistance, we can gain a deeper understanding of your child's individual needs and preferences.

Please take a few moments to complete the blank template sent home with your child today and return it to school by Monday, 30th September.

Below is an example of a completed About Me Card.

Thank you for your continued support.

Last day of the school year.

We want to say a huge thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us this year. It seems like only a few weeks ago you were dropping them off to start Reception. Where has the year gone?  We have had an absolute blast getting to know each one of your children.  They have been a pleasure to teach!  Thank you for your continuous support.  Without your support, our job would be so much harder.  Thank you for attending concerts, and our parental events, supporting us on trips, and working alongside us to develop your child.  We wish you all a safe and lovely summer and look forward to seeing you all in our brand-new school building on Wednesday 4th of September.

            Penygawsi Book Swap

Next week is the 'Great Big Green Week' - the UK's biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. The theme for this year is 'swaps'.

The Eco Committee have decided to run a 'Book Swap' in school as part of this celebration. We usually have so many books at home that we don't look at anymore and they could give so much enjoyment to someone else instead of sitting on a shelf. We ask that every child donates two books (or one, if you'd prefer) to our book swap, so we can create a range of choice. The Eco Committee will then set up a swap shop next Tuesday (11th) and each child will have the opportunity to choose a book to take home (free).

Please bring in your donated books (2 if possible) on Friday or at the latest on Monday morning, to give the Eco Committee time to sort them into age groups.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

            #WorldDownSyndromeDay

            Why mark WDSD?

On this one day we have a chance to make a change. A better chance than any other day!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for rights, inclusion, and well-being. Please join us in raising awareness of Down Syndrome by wearing either lots of socks or odd socks to school on this day!

            Scholastic Book Fair

The Book Fair has arrived in school today.  All the children have had an opportunity to see what books are available and have chosen one book for their wish list.  The name of the book and price will be sent home on a post-it note this evening.  If you would like to purchase this book, please send the money in between Monday and Thursday next week, in a sealed envelope.  This is based on a first come first served basis, so if the book your child has chosen for their wish list has sold out, please let us know whether you are happy for your child to purchase a different book instead.

As part of our instructional writing and linking with our St David's Day Eisteddfod, we are going to be preparing, cooking, and eating a Welsh cawl in class.  We will be using the following ingredients:

            Leeks

            Carrots

            Swede

            Potatoes

            Onions

Kallo low salt, gluten, and lactose-free stock cube.

If your child is allergic to any of these ingredients, please let a staff member know at the gate/door today or tomorrow, so we can look for alternatives on the weekend.

            Many thanks
